An Interview With The Duo, HER MIND

What first drew you into music?

Cameron: I’ve been playing piano ever since I was a child, I should’ve practiced more though I was lazy, and I still am to be honest; I don’t practice as much as I should. I then started producing my own Music around 5/6 years ago, what really first got me into production was listening to all these incredible electronic tracks and going this is so awesome how do I do this?

Sam: music has always been a huge part of my life! I grew up listening to the chili peppers, van halen, metallica, AC/DC, but I’ve developed my passion for electronic music over the last 6 years or so, and also I’ve fallen in love with bass music over the last 2 years or so

Your track “I Wish You Were Still Here” is absolutely amazing! How did you achieve such a great signature sound in such a short time? Also, what is your creative process like?

Cameron: Haha thank you so much! I’m humbled by your words! and I’ve always gravitated towards this type of music. It’s simple and I really feel like I can express myself super well with it. I honestly feel like petit biscuit really pioneered this type of music and I’m just trying to add my own flavor to the genre that’s all. My creative process? The tracks usually start with me messing around on my Guitar then building the chords/drums around the guitar.

Going over your Soundcloud we can tell you love experimenting with new sounds. Can you tell us more about your studio setup and some of your favorite plugins/instruments?

Cameron: Sure!! So, right now I’m going to pharmacy school so don’t have too much of a fancy setup. I’m using the novation 49 key for my keys; I have a fender guitar that I play and a Behringer for my audio interface. I also use the classic audio technicas for my headphones. You honestly don’t really need too much stuff, in my opinion it’s honestly not about what equipment you have, it’s more just about being willing to constantly work on your craft and getting better.

Sam: my studio setup is pretty simple honestly – I do all my final mixing and mastering on my pair of audio technica MX-50’s – such a great pair of headphones that has lasted me forever haha. As for my favorite plugins, Ableton has a lot of really awesome plug ins that you can get super creative and in-depth with – also the stand-alone FX version of Serum can get you some super cool timbres, the ring modulation filter is super cool!

Your music sounds very organic and authentic. Do you play any real-life instruments?

Cameron: Thank you!! That’s what I was going for haha. Yes! I’ve been playing piano pretty much my entire life, I’m not THAT good though, not at all as good as I should be for playing this long. And I recently picked up guitar a year or two ago. I don’t really know how to play the guitar, like I can play basic chords and stuff, but I just know what sounds good and my ear is trained well enough that I’m able to just write a melody/top to my chords. I tend to stay away from more synthy stuff and to lean more towards organic and real instruments like strings and guitar. I wrote and played everything in “I wish you were still here.” I’m pretty proud of it.

Sam: I unfortunately do not play and real-life instruments, however I would love to learn one day! I mainly do programming, sound design and mixing/mastering – Cameron is the piano master!

What are your musical goals for the future?

Cameron: I guess it would be to just try to get my music heard to as many people as I possibly can and try to network with more artists and labels.

Sam: Some really big goals for us is to get a track signed to a major label, however in the short term, it’s just to write music that we’re passionate about, and that’s what we’re going to keep doing!

What are your goals for the coming months? Any upcoming projects we can get excited about?

By the time this interview’s out, my next track will have already come out so definitely check that out! We’re also working on an album with our good friend zxro which is almost done and will most likely be out early 2020 (hopefully).
