The Verdigris Trio – “iron and stone” (Brazen Head Recordings, 2018)

“iron and stone” is a new release of “Brazen Head Recordings”. Album was recorded by “The Verdigris Trio” – it’s Dominic Lash (double bass), Wayne Rex (drums) and Tim Hill (alto and baritone saxophone). “Verdigris Trio” music is moving, dynamic and inspiring. It’s filled with modern Musical decisions, innovative and evocative instrumentation, exotic and extravagant instrumental, timbral and harmonic combinations, dynamic tempos and rich musical language. Compositions usually have expressive sound and are based on hot, sharp and aggressive playing manner. Dramatic and hot passion, aggressive expression is connected with silent pauses, abruptions, sudden and effective diminuendo, groovy and franky solos or relaxing and peaceful solos. Though the music is based on avant-garde jazz and its basics, it also has relation with contemporary academical and experimental music, also with some elements of academic avant-garde and modern jazz styles. Musicians are the masters of switching between various moods, styles and expressions. All these elements are masterfully fused together and make remarkable and interesting sound. The music by the trio always is filled with emotional and spontaneous musical decisions, impressive, bright and eclectic stylistic combinations, rich and exclusive musical language and adventurous turns.

“iron and stone” has interesting and evocative sound. The music is filled with bright and creative musical decisions, innovative instrumentation and dynamic mood. Free, abstract and multi-layed musical pattern. colorful harmony, conceptual episodes, strong contrast between sharp and aggressive dissonances and soft consonances, dynamic rhythmic, open form and wide range of expressions and other elements – that’s the base of the musical pattern in all compositions. Musicians are creative and innovative experimentators – they like to break the traditional rules and create their own methods of playing. They are taking on all the time on risky and adventurous musical decisions, get together contrasting moods and episodes, strange, weird and outrageous timbres, wild noises, interesting expressions and innovative ways of instrumentation. That makes an effort to original and interesting sound of the album. Musicians are improvising collectively – turbulent, bright, expressive and wild free improvisations are get together with fabulous and impressive solos by each musician. Each musician is making an effort to whole musical pattern – they masterfully take over the melodies, rhythms and other elements of musical language and variate it in natural and organic way. That how they make abstract, open and bright space for free improvisation and multi-colored musical pattern. Lots of timbres, rhythms and colors are fused with coloristic elements, variations, abbreviations, ornaments, virtuosic passages, roulades and other elements. It gently illustrates melodic and rhythmic section and keep solid, gorgeous and bright background. The music is based on free improvisation and avant-garde jazz elements, but it also has an influenze of modern jazz styles or contemporary academical music. Alto and baritone saxophones by Tim Hill are expressive, vital and dynamic. It’s the source of energy, wild expression and live in the compositions. Gravity, passion, hot thrills and wild fast passages contain big part of musical pattern and are frequently used in improvisations. Improviser masterfully goes through different moods and expressions – from groovy, deoressivem subtle and gentle, light and solemn the melodic line goes straight up to blowing, harsh, aggressive, vibrant and powerful solos and turbulent culminations. The saxophone solos are the fusion of remarkable and thrilling melodies, free and spontaneous solos, wild fast passages, hot thrills, roaring and bursting blow outs, vibrant energy explosions and dozens of effective, innovative and expressive instrumentation’s decisions. It makes the opposite to double bass of Dominic Lash. The playing manner of this improviser highly differs from the passionate and live Tim Hill. Abstract, free and soft episodes conatin the base of his music. Dominic Lash improvisations have the influenze of experimental and contemporary academical music – it makes an artsy and organic combination with free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. Improviser likes to make eclectic and exotic musical decisions, twist together different episodes and styles. Monotonic, dark and solid bass line gently goes along with ambient timbres, weird and outrageous sounds and bright explosions of energy. Improviser pays the highest attention to production of rare and gorgeous timbres, expansion of technical abilities of double bass and the search of new, modern and innovative sound. His improvisations have effective, passionate and modern sound. Wayne Rex is leading the drum section, which is very dynamic and contrasting. It contains really huge variety of different timbres and rhythms – from static, slow and separate rhythms it goes to dynamic solos, free improvisations, turbulent and roaring drum rolls, exotic and gorgeous timbres, gentle and sweet excerpts, subtle and relaxing pieces, and many other elements. It makes an effort to solid, interesting and bright rhythmic section, which is kept through all album. His playing style is somewhere of spontaneous and adventurous avant-garde jazz and bebop, post bop, neo bop and other styles of avant-garde jazz. Three musicians are improvising with inspiration and passion – album has remarkable and expressive sound.
