Quoan – “Fine Dining” (Orenda Records, 2018)

“Fine Dining” is also one of the newest album of this year, released by “Orenda Records on January 26, 2018. This interesting and expressive avant-garde Jazz album was recorded by quartet – it’s Brian Walsh (clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet), Daniel Rosenboom (trumpet, piccolo trumpet, flugelhorn), Sam Minaie (bass) and Mark Ferber (drums). All these four jazz musicians are experienced and talented jazz improvisers. Their improvisations are always full of powerful bursts of energy, various moods, characters, Playing manners, music styles and other music language elements are masterfully and organically connected in one place. The elements of avant-garde jazz, bebop, post bop, other modern and contemporary jazz styles, the intonations of traditional jazz are heard in these compositions. The biggest attention is payed to extract and create extraordinary and different sound. Musicians are using extended and innovative Playing Techniques, unusual and shocking musical expressions, inventive instrumentation decisions to expand the technical abilities of the instruments and get out of the zone of traditional improvising. They can masterfully fuse together absolutely different moods, styles and episodes – dramatic, nostalgic and subtle sound they ironically and humorously blend together with vivacious, expressive, passionate, furious and dramatic improvisations.

This album compositions are based on contrasts and the synthesis between free jazz, bebop, various modern jazz styles, contemporary and traditional jazz intonations. The musicians are twisting between different moods, feelings, sounds, timbres, playing techniques and other elements of musical language. The compositions of these four musicians are based on sudden twists, pleasant and unpredictable surprises, fascinating musical decisions, innovative instrumentation and expressive playing. Musicians are improvising especially expressive and with passion – their improvisations are very dynamic and bright. Clarinets and trumpets duets are very bright and vivacious for the most of the time – they bring energy and live to the album. These melodies are full of huge diversity of different playing techniques, musical expressions, dynamics and other elements of musical language. Virtuosic, sharp, wild fast and furious solos, dramatic and vibrant melodies, vivacious, joyful and striking improvisations, unusual and extraordinary sounds, powerful loud blow outs and many other elements form the basic of these instrument improvisations. Especially effective and expressive are the duos between trumpets and clarinets. Sam Minaie bass improvisations are dynamic and constantly changing – from the subtle, silent, nostalgic, lyric and slow solos his music gets to expressive, loud, very active and speedy improvisations with passionate solos. Pizzicato, staccato, arpeggio, various repetitive melodic and rhythmic elements, huge variety of different musical expressions and innovative ways of playing – musicians masterfully use and fuse together extended, traditional playing techniques and shocking methods of playing. Drums improvisations by Mark Ferber form independent and bright rhythmical section. Huge range of different rhythms – monotonous and dynamic, slow and extremely speedy, powerful loud and silent – these and many others types of rhythms, playing techniques and expressions create original sound and keep the strong and solid rhythmical section of these compositions. Original, expressive, passionate and inventive improvising create modern and fascinating sound of this album.
