“Negen/Live at Smup” was released this month by “FMR Records”. This interesting avant-garde jazz album was recorded by jazz ensemble “Kabas” and trumpeter Luis Vincente and percussionist Carlos Godinho. “Kabas” members are interesting and experienced avant-garde jazz musicians – it’s Nils Vermeulen (double bass), Elias Devoldere (drums), Jan Daelman (flute) and Thijs Troch (piano). The musicians of this Belgium jazz quartet have been Playing together many times. Unique manner, interesting and spontaneous improvising, original Musical decisions, wild, dynamic and energetic or subtle and soft sound – all these elements create fascinating and outstanding sound of their improvisations. Quartet was founded two years ago – in 2016, but the members had been playing together with other famous and innovative jazz musicians many times before that. Luis Vincente is one of the most famous trumpeter of contemporary avant-garde jazz scene. He had been playing many times with Evan Parker, Chris Speed, Mário Laginha, David Binney, Jesse Davis, Julian Arguelles, Ohad Talmor, André Fernandes and many other famous jazz masters. Carlos Godinho is innovative and creative avant-garde jazz percussionist, which has a masterful ability to create original and extraordinary sound by using divers and innovative playing techniques.
This album compositions are based on musical experiments and the synthesis of various jazz styles. Free and dynamic improvisations are based on many different musical expressions, extended playing techniques and other Musical Language Elements, whose create wide diversity of musical language elements. Musicians are improvising dynamic, organically and expressive. Wild fast pasages, furious and sharp solos, extremely rapid and sudden changes of styles and manners, dynamic rhythmic and harmony – all these elements are the basics of these compositions. Trumpeter Luis Vincente playing is extremely live, expressive and vivid. Striking, sharp, aggressive and furious solos, sudden stylistic changes, colorful and gorgeous sounds, extraordinary timbres, extended playing techniques, unusual and shocking methods of playing, powerful and intensive solos, vibrant melodies which are gently connected together with soft, silent and slow solos – all these elements create original, vivacious and constantly changing musical language. Vivacious, especially expressive, impressive and passionate trumpet improvisations are full of pleasant surprises and free musical experiments – all these elements make an effort to whole compositions sound. Piano melodies Thijs Troch also are very vivid, powerful, solid and bright. Pianist try out many different playing techniques and expressions, he improvises emotional, especially expressive and vivacious. Sharp, aggressive and provocative sound, vivacious, wild fast and furious solos, active, monotonic and speedy rhythms, clear and creative synthesis between avant-garde jazz and bebop, sharp and colorful harmony – all these elements are heard very clearly in his improvisations. The duets of piano and trumpet bring joyful, vivacious, sharp and powerful sound to the compositions. Soft and length flute improvisations, subtle double bass solos are absolutely different from the active and expressive improvisations. These two instruments melodies are the opposites to bright and active trumpet improvisations and passionate piano solos. Subtle, peaceful and lyric mood, silent and calm sound, repetitive and static rhythmic, soft harmony, slow or medium slow tempo – these musical language elements make an opposite, but very effective and touching musical pattern. Drums and percussion improvisations form the third independent musical pattern of these compositions – very colorful, expressive and dynamic rhythmic section. This section consists of expressive drum rolls, very active and speedy rhythms, powerful drum rolls, effective trills, glissando, extraordinary and gorgeous sounds extracted by experimental ways of playing and many other elements. Wide range of variable musical expressions, instruments sounds and playing techniques are used here. All musicians are improvising interesting and creative – each of them has their own and individual playing manner and musical language. All these different and contrasting elements get together in one place and create effective and astonishing sound.
