“Field Recording from the Acoustic Bicycle Tour (Solos)” was released this year by avant-garde jazz improviser Taylor Ho Bynum. Taylor Ho Bynum (1975) is American avant-garde jazz improviser and composer. His main instrument is cornet, but he also plays trumpet, bass clarinet, flugelhorn and other similar instruments. Taylor’s Ho Bynum’s Musical career began in early 1990s, when he started to play with Thomas Fujiwara. He had been studying in Wesleyan University where his professors were Anthony Braxton and Pheeroan akLaff. Since the beginning of his musical career, Taylor Ho Bynum had been improvising, collaborating and playing together with Dominic Lash, Alexander Hawkins, Jim Hobbs, Bill Lowe, Mary Halvorson, Thomas Fujiwara, Jessica Pavone, Joe Morris, Kwaku Kwaakye Obeng and many others. His albums were recorded at various labels – “Firehouse 12”, “Cuneiform”, “Relative Pitch”, “Clean Feed Records”, “Not Two Records” and many others. Taylor Ho Bynum playing style is based on interesting and inventive musical decisions, bright and evocative musical language, creative, spontaneous and expressive improvising.

This album compositions were recorded in various places in nature and are dedicated for solo cornet. Free jazz improvisations are mixed together with field recordings, natural sounds of nature – along with cornet sounds there’s also heard birds twittering and other nature sounds. Taylor Ho Bynum try out many different playing techniques – he masterfully and effectively combines together shocking and traditional ways of playing. He also use wide range of musical expressions and other musical language elements. This music is based on dynamic rhythmic, sharp harmony, shocking and spontaneous musical experiments, extraordinary musical decisions and expressive playing. Even though this music sometimes gets to be static and calm, these improvisations have many interesting timbres, extraordinary and fascinating musical experiments, bright and fabulous musical language and original sound. Taylor Ho Bynum likes to experiment and to create extraordinary sound – many different moods, styles, playing manners, characters and various musical language elements are twisted together in one place. From very calm, relaxing, peaceful and restful episodes which gently fit together with nature sounds this music sudden turns to be active, expressive, loud and full of interesting timbres, weird sounds and noises. The musical language of these compositions based on homophony, sharp and aggressive harmony, free jazz and various modern jazz styles synthesis. The improviser pay the highest attention to the sound –  he try many playing techniques, special effects and improvises creatively, but the main mood, sound and character of whole album is calm, relaxing and peaceful. Though he’s playing alone, Taylor Ho Bynum solo improvisations have intensive, solid and firm background, melodic, harmonic and rhythmic background. He manages to create very interesting musical material, several layers of musical pattern which are masterfully connected together in one improvisation. These improvisations also demonstrate his own and unique playing style, independent and creative improvising and tendency to make inventive, extraordinary and fascinating musical decisions. Relaxing, dynamic, calm, peaceful and interesting – that’s how we should call this interesting and colorful album.
