Hotel Review: The Kimpton Topaz in Washington, DC

So here's the thing. The Topaz is a wonderful example of Kimpton's ability to repurpose any property into a wonderful hotel experience. Sure, you're going to read about some Paint Caked Door Frames and some less than perfect plastered ceilings. This was a really old apartment building in its former life and Kimpton has chosen to keep some of those historic details, like the paint caked decorative door frames, in tact. Get over it,First off, this is "tourist" Kimpton. I'm not sure if they have that designation internally but It's what I call their neighborhood based smaller properties of which there are many in DC.We stay at the Topaz regularly. It's often less expensive than some of the other Kimptons and is located on a quiet one way street on the edge of downtown (Farragut/K street) and Dupont Circle is just north. You can walk to the hipster 14th Street corridor as well.We travel to DC with our Golden Retriever and, as everyone with a pet knows by now, Kimptons are the only place to stay with a pet. We generally get room 506, which is a very very large king room with smallish but just fine bathroom. Remember was an old apartment building so their was dressing area in what was most likely the walk through closet to the bath. There is also a very odd little room carved into the large rectangle of the main room. It has a curtain and day bed in it. The day bed has a vinyl covering. We can't decide if it's for the dog or for adult activities. In any case, it's a talking point and a gas. We've also stayed in smaller rooms which are equally well appointed, just a bit smaller. But none really tiny.Service is Kimpton Outstanding. Chris, a desk manager, went way over the top with our Inner Circle amenity. Monte, our Golden, was left a huge treat AND two high end chew toys.. a red elephant and blue donkey....gotta love DC in an election year! Chris, and other members of the staff, doted on Monte and made it a wonderful experience. The lobby is smallish and so is the restaurant, though we've never eaten there, but all seems well.Who should stay here? Couples or singles looking for a wonderful quite on the weekends neighborhood to take advantage of DC's best neighborhoods. Business people traveling solo for a meeting will love the quick walk to downtown from this quieter end of the border with residential DC.As always, be sure to sign up for Kimpton Rewards so you get free wifi and a $10 raid the mini bar discount.
