‘Rebuild, Rise Up!’ is an evening of live music at the iconic Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in support of the British Caribbean Island of Anguilla
on Sunday 7th January 2018 from 6.30pm.
The Dune Preserve on Rendezvous Bay is a much-loved beach bar in Anguilla and they announced their plans to raise funds in order to assist in the continued relief efforts in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria. Led by Anguilla's biggest reggae star, the legendary Bankie Banx and Ada Lo (originally from the UK and events producer of Ruby Sings and various other Tambourine Foundation productions) who wanted to unite island lovers in the UK for a very special one-off collaboration at the globally renowned jazz club in London's Soho.
Hurricanes Irma and Maria delivered some of the most powerful Atlantic basin storms ever recorded across the Leeward Islands. Anguillans are still in desperate need of support despite recovering as much as they can. They have suffered widespread damage to homes, businesses and schools and the power supply to the island was massively destroyed.
The Anguilla Tourism Board has announced that the Island is officially 'open for business' to encourage visitors from the UK and globally to travel to the Island this winter, ensuring the swift economic recovery of its primary sector.
However, event organisers intend to raise enough money to benefit various institutions, including Albena Lake Hodge, the only secondary education facility on the island, where school equipment, computers and learning supplies were either lost or severely damaged during the storms. Currently, children are effectively being schooled in shifts, which could be impactful to their long-term education.
This fantastic ‘Rebuild, Rise Up!’ concert aims to deliver joyful, uptempo live music. Bankie Banx will be coming to the UK for the first time in over 30 years. His music career began in his home, Anguilla and took him around the Caribbean in the 70’s with his band Roots and Herbs. He then toured Europe which culminated in an eight-year stint in New York in the 80s and 90’s before he returned home Bankie's own home and beach shack was destroyed during the storm. He is facing a difficult recovery, with great uncertainty. However, he is passionate about raising awareness for his island home and the people of Anguilla.
This is the first fundraiser organised in support of a Caribbean island to be held in the main downstairs venue in Ronnie Scott’s and as a result, will undoubtedly attract a lot of support from both frequent visitors to the Caribbean and music lovers alike. Morcheeba is first on the highly anticipated line-up, with further artists to be announced in the forthcoming weeks.
