Back in November of 1971, a young man who had entered German magazine Bravo’s promotional contest for Steve McQueen’s Le Mans movie was left disappointed when he didn’t get to win the first prize, which was a Porsche 914. He won the second prize though – the Gulf Racing Suit, Bell helmet and Nomex underwear worn by Steve McQueen’s character Michael Delaney.
46-years later, the suit and accompaniments that had been kept preserved by the now late contestant’s wife have come out for the very first time, harking back to the time when the cult motorsport movie featuring Porsche 917s and Ferrari 512s was shot. While this combination of colour have been seen on countless fans throughout the decades, this is the very first one of its kind that perhaps started the trend. The Hinchman jacket still features all of its original patches, including the iconic Gulf, Firestone, and Heuer sponsorships. The entire set will be available for offer at RM Sotheby’s New York Sale.
