It was raining the night before, making many skeptical about the turn out at this year’s Luftgekühlt 4. Thankfully the next morning, the rain had stopped and the shades of grey were quickly taken over by the beautiful amber light from the Californian sun peeking through the patchy sky. At Warehouse No.10 on the Port of Los Angeles, Luftgekühlt 4 was now alive.

This year was the fourth edition of Luftgekühlt, an event dedicated to air-cooled Porsche. The Luftgekühlt story had its humble beginnings with two Porsche enthusiasts who aligned in thought to create an event that would pay homage to the air-cooled Neunelfers of yesteryears. What we see here today is the result of what happened four-years ago when 2-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and SoCal creative director Howie Idelson got together with 40 other air-cooled Porsche enthusiasts at Deus Ex Santa Monica to talk about everything air-cooled and everything Porsche.

The 2017 edition of Luftgekühlt was in every way a Porsche explosion. The dedicated air-cooled Porsche parking that could take in 600 cars was full in the first 32 hours since the reservations opened. This was off course, just a hint at how things were about to go.

Luftgekühlt 4 garnered more than 800 Porsches from all across United States. Being LA, the list of celebrity owners and important people in the world of Porsche had to be extensive. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld and producer Jack Olsen loftily drove into the arena in their air-cooled Porsches while on the extreme end of things was Michael Pollock, who drove his blue air-cooled Neunelfer 2800miles from New York to Los Angeles to attend Luftgekühlt 4. Rod Emory from Emory Motorsports drove in with their gorgeous 356 Outlaw while Canepa Motorsport unveiled their insane 753bhp Porsche 959 Canepa Gen III in Emerald Green; the most powerful Porsche 959 in the world.

Big Porsche gatherings aren’t anything new. We have seen more than 2000 cars gather at Laguna Seca for the Rennsport Reunion before. But while things were more serious on the racing circuit, Luftgekühlt keeps the atmosphere light, relaxed and in the perfect sense of social chilling with air-cooled Porsches.
