Glen Raymond and Kate Catford took out the Rally NSW Caves Classic in Oberon over the weekend. The duo in their Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 9 won by a commanding 42 seconds from Richard Shimmon and Jim Gleeson in their EVO 7.
The Rally was run over 8 stages with two loops of four stages. The mileage was high though as SS2, 3, 6 and 7 were over 20km, meaning that the drivers had to manage their cars and tyres in the outskirts of Oberon, a few hours west of Sydney.
Tom Clark in his EVO 9 looked on form, taking the first two stages, but ignition issues after SS3 put paid to his chances. He had built up a 22 second gap over the first two stages but while he was able to rejoin and take out SS5 and 7, he had to settle to be happy with his pace, rather than a good result.
Shimmon would take SS4, SS8 and would equal Clark on SS7 but would lose too much time on the other stages to be a true threat for the win. SS6 – Boggy Creek 2 would see his run for victory effectively end, losing 25 seconds to Clark on that stage.
This left Raymond to control the rally from SS3. He took a 45 second lead into the midday service and was able to extend the gap to over a minute he controlled his pace on the final two stages to take the win.
Third was Tristan Kent with Robert Males in their EVO 9. It was a Mitsibushi 1-2-3-4 with the first Subaru, that of Andrew Penny and Rhys Llewellyn in fifth.
The 2WD drive winner was Thomas Dermondy in his Ford Escort RS1800 ahead of the Citroen DS3 of Tony Sullens and Kaylie Newell.
