Peyronie’s Disease: Everything You Need to Know about a Bent Penis

One in every hundred of men over 18 suffer from Peyronie’s Disease, a condition in which the Penis has an extreme bend of 20-percent or greater. While the exact cause of the disease is unknown, researchers believe that minor and major traumas lead to scar tissue formation and buildup, eventually curving a man’s penis in a particular direction. This curvature happens over time and once significant, can lead to extreme pain when urinating or getting an erection. Some men cannot get or sustain an erection or find sex too painful as a result of Peyronie’s disease, leading to erectile dysfunction. While there’s isn’t a cure, there is a wide range of treatments to help, and sometimes reverse, Peyronie’s disease to help men decrease pain and increase function.

Peyronie’s Disease Treatments

There’s no cure for Peyronie’s Disease, but it is treatable. Some less severe cases even resolve themselves. Most doctors use a year-long “wait and see” approach at first. If it doesn’t work itself out in the first year, there are several treatment options.

Lifestyle Changes

Always the first thing to try, lifestyle changes can greatly affect Peyronie’s disease. Reducing or removing alcohol, reducing non-prescription medications, and quitting smoking can all lessen the effects of Peyronie’s. Getting 30 or more minutes of exercise each day can improve blood flow to the member, as well.

Prescription Medication

So far, the only options for medication involve injection directly into the penis. There is only one drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat Peyronie’s disease, Xiaflex (clostridium histolyticum). The drug is only recommended for men who experience a 30-percent or greater bend to their penis and is given as a series of injections over time. Xiaflex breaks down scar tissue to lessen the bend in the penis. In addition to the injections, men undergoing treatment with Xiaflex also need to commit to a six-week physical therapy program while getting injections. This program includes the following daily exercises:

  • Three times a day for 30 seconds each, the patient will need to stretch the penis while flaccid.
  • Once per day, the patient will need to straighten his penis when his penis gets hard without sexual stimulation. He should perform the exercise for 30 seconds.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Popular non-surgical treatments include shock-wave therapy, genital traction therapy, use of vacuum-esque devices to help stretch the penis, and lontophoresis, which is the delivery of weak electrical current to administer special medication through the skin.

Surgical Intervention

Surgery is reserved for only the most severe cases of Peyronie’s disease. There are several surgical interventions including shortening the side opposite the bend in the penis, genital implants, or lengthening the side of the bend. Shortening can result in a shorter penis and lengthening runs a greater risk of erectile dysfunction.

L-Carnitine

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of natural remedies that have shown any kind of efficacy when treating Peyronie’s disease’ however, one study from 2001 found that L-Carnitine was a safe and successful option for acute and early chronic Peyronie’s Disease, performing better than the drug, tamoxifen.

Regular Penis Care

A popular way to implement a regimen that includes L-Carnitine is through a specially formulated penis health crème  (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which has been clinically proven safe and mild for skin) which can be applied topically to the member. This crème also includes critical penis health promoters in the form of vitamins and amino acids to increase collagen production, protect against peripheral nerve damage, and invigorate the penis.

Researchers are still studying what causes Peyronie’s disease and how to cure it. Men who think they have Peyronie’s should see a doctor immediately for diagnosis.
