What is International Women’s Day?

Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated all over the world. How can you Impress her this International Women’s Day? For centuries, women have been fighting for equality on all platforms. Not only is IWD about honoring women’s achievements and forging equality, but it is also about celebrating the diverse and authentic imagery of women. It is about remembering the struggle women had to endure to blaze the path they are on today. The first gathering happened in 1911, which would make this year the 109th celebration.

While the first gathering happened in 1911, the actual idea of International Women’s Day came about in 1910. During this year, a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. It could not have been surmised that a woman by the name of Clara Zetkin would propose what we now know as International Women’s Day. She was a leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party in Germany. When she voiced that women should be celebrated and press for their demands every year, there was unanimous approval.

In Russia, this day is especially important. They campaigned for peace on the eve of World War I and observed their first International Women’s day in 1913. Just four years later, over 2 million Russian soldiers died in World War 1. In response to this overwhelming loss, Russian women began a strike for bread and peace. They persevered on strike for four days until the Czar was forced to renounce his throne and the government granted women the right to vote. Originally celebrated in February due to the Julian calendar, International Women’s Day was transferred to March 8 after following the Gregorian calendar. And thus, this has been the global date ever since.
