Help overcome everyday challenges with physical activity and achieve better health at the same time!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to one-third of all U.S. adults over the age of 50 have little or no physical activity outside of work.

Study after study finds physical activity is critical to preserving good heart and brain health, particularly as we age. However, despite the abundance of research that shows Staying Active is one of the most effective methods of warding off chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and dementia, statistics show very few people as we age move as much we once did, and certainly not as much we really should.

The biggest hurdle often cited to staying active is just not having enough time. Typically, as we get older we find that we have multiple roles often including work, raising children, sometimes caregiving for others, not to mention time spent involved with our community and friends.  While all of these activities take up valuable time, they also contribute to a potential hurdle to exercise – fatigue.

One of the best ways to combat fatigue, as it turns out, is exercising!  Even if you can only incorporate small extra movements throughout the day you can try to make them count.  For instance, you can consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Perhaps consider walking a child to school instead of driving them if that is an option. Take a walk with a co-worker instead of sitting down for a meeting, or even schedule a daily walk as part of your lunch break. You could even just park your car as far away as possible from the store, restaurant, work, or school to get in those extra steps in. Try walking or biking to an errand if it is nearby instead of driving. 

If you take a little time to think about it, you can come up with ways that make sense for you.  And given the importance of exercising, it is well worth doing!
