Heart Smart Grilling!

We all love it!  For some it is a year-round pleasure and for others it is a seasonal luxury we start to enjoy soon after the long cold winters have ended – either way, we can’t wait to fire up that grill!

As we do, however, we should be mindful and try not to overindulge and consume too much of those items which are not Heart healthy such as  high-fat meats and sausages.  When we do fire up the grill throughout the summer, let’s try to manage those foods which have high levels of saturated fat, added sugar and cholesterol.

High Cholesterol, otherwise known as “the silent killer”, is a waxy type substance found in your blood. Your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, but high levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of atherosclerosis, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. A healthy diet, regular exercise and sometimes medication can help reduce high cholesterol, protecting yourself from potential heart problems.

Grill more Fruits and Vegetables: Tomatoes, Onions, Bell Peppers Zucchini, Eggplant, Pineapple, Mango, Apples, Pears to name a few.

Grill Smart and Lean:  When Grilling meats, limit the amount of fat that will drip on the coals preparing lean cuts trimmed of visible fat and skin. By doing this you are already off to a healthier start.

Choose Fish with healthy fats: like Salmon or Trout.

Build Flavor with Marinades and Rubs: Giving up barbecue sauce does not mean you’ll have flavorless food, but these sauces are frequently loaded with added sugar. In its place, you can create more flavorful foods to savor by marinating or using rubs. Or make your own barbeque sauce and just go easy on the sugar.

Happy Grilling to you and your heart!

Stay safe & be well,
