Heart Disease Doesn’t Only Occur for Older Adults

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women globally.  There is an even larger increase in cardiovascular deaths in younger individuals over the last decade.  Sadly, 1 in 5 Heart attack survivors are under the age of 40.  An age group that is considered “very young.” While several factors could contribute to why we are seeing more cardiovascular issues amongst young people, lifestyle is certainly a significant reason.

Prevalence of obesity and diabetes. Over 93 million adults in the United States are obese, with more than 100 million living with diabetes or prediabetes. With that, roughly 84 million adults have prediabetes in the United States, while 90% are unaware that they even have it. These staggering statistics could be due to poor lifestyle habits and dietary choices early on. Another reason: the increase of food delivery services. With the popularity and convenience, it is much easier for us to ditch the cooking and lose track of what we are consuming.

Along with poor dietary choices, we are seeing a significant absence of physical activity. It’s important to ensure you’re getting enough exercise – a little each day could go a long way. Nowadays, there are many at home jobs with little movement. If you are typically sedentary at your job, try to keep your body moving as much as you can. Sitting all day is not beneficial, especially long-term. To keep yourself moving, be sure to get up each hour, or invest in a standing desk.

Binge drinking and alcohol consumption. It’s no secret that excessive drinking could lead to an increased risk of heart disease. At an early age, it’s very important to be sensible of your alcohol intake. With that, it’s crucial to avoid binge drinking and be aware of the implications. According to the Journal of the American Heart Association, young adults who binge drink may have higher risk factors associated with heart disease, compared to those who do not binge drink.

Implementing change. Overall, awareness is essential. It’s important to be aware of heart health and the impact of lifestyle choices, no matter your age. Although it could be difficult, it’s certainly never too late to change your lifestyle choices. Educate yourself and others – join a loved one and implement healthy choices together to better combat this devastating disease. At BIOLIFE4D, our goal is to impact all of humanity and offer a viable solution to heart disease, as there currently isn’t one.

Stay safe and be well!
