HOW TO LOOK AFTER A LONG BEARD
Whether you're simply considering growing out your stubble, beginning to grow a longer beard or where you're already rocking the longest beard in Britain, here some useful hints and tips for taking care of a long beard.
It's a fact; long beards are back and they're all the rage. Celebrities from around the world are all doing it, and they make growing a long beard look so easy. But how do they do it? Whichever long beard style you're going for, whether it's the Jason Momoa or Lionel Messi beard look, there's a lot more to growing a long beard than meets the eye.
If you want to look more handsome and less Hagrid, you'll need to invest in the best beard care to get the best from your beard. We're going to help give you the best advice on the best beard care for your beard.
YOUR LONG BEARD ARSENAL
From the Victorian era or even way back to the days of Greek Mythology, great beards are often associated with great wisdom. We're going to help add to your beard knowledge by starting out with the basics.
You need to get your hands on the best beard products if you want to get the best from your long beard. Proper beard care means choosing organic, natural beard oils that will be kind to your skin and grizzly bush, it means choosing the best beard balms, and crucially the best beard comb that can help work its way through any beard knots or tangles without feeling like you're having your eyebrows plucked.
So what kind of Beard Products do I need to help grow and maintain a delicious, wholesome facial extravaganza? Most of these products can be found in a beard gift set, but we're going to list out the most important beard products below:
1. The Beard Comb
Let's start with the basics.
A good quality Beard Comb is often overlooked, but if you're going to grow your beard out then you're going to need something to help keep its shape and style. Put it this way, you wouldn't use your hands to brush long hair, so you will need the right tools for the job to keep your long beard looking pristine, too. So it's important to get your hands on the best beard comb for your new look.
Beard Combs come in all shapes, sizes and materials. Metal Beard Combs, Plastic Beard Combs and Wood Beard Combs. There are so many choices to choose from it can often mean buying the right beard comb for your long beard becomes an overwhelming task. But, there's a few quick tips and hints that will make choosing the right beard comb for you a little easier:
- Choose wood.
The best Beard Combs are wood Beard Combs. Why? A Wood Beard Comb soaks up any natural oils on your cheeks and facial hair as well as any additional beard oils and balms that you choose to use.
Beard Oils and Balms naturally compliment the wood, too, keeping the hardwood well conditioned and maintaining it's natural pores and colour. They're also more eco friendly than plastic combs.
A good quality wood comb:
uses natural hardwood weight and design to smoothly brush through knots and tangleswon't split easily, will withstand being cleaned regularly without changing shape, have durable comb teethnaturally soaks balm and oils to condition the comb and last longer
2. Beard Oil
Beard Oil is essential in helping to soften and tame that long manly beard hair of yours. The importance of beard oil often depends on the individual; everybody's skin type and hair type varies. That means you may want to regularly oil your beard if you have dry skin and wiry hair, others may use beard oil less frequently and as and when they see fit.
The key, however, is to use natural and organic beard oil for your long beard. Anything else can contribute to skin and beard irritation, flaky and shaggy beard hair. Whereas natural and organic beard oils can help moisturise and soften the skin on your cheeks helping to nourish and moisturise from the root of your beard hair without causing any irritation and unwanted harmful side effects. If you can get the basics right, there's every chance your long beard will grow to be the masterpiece you've been dreaming of!
3. Beard Balm
Long beards can get unruly and develop a whole mind of their own. That's why it's important to tame your long beard by styling and shaping it using the right Beard Balm. Whilst beard oil is used for keeping your skin and facial hair in good health, Beard Balm is important for keeping your long beard in shape.
It's also important to choose both a natural and organic Balm, to help nourish and care for your skin and hair. That means a Balm with no additives or nasty chemicals. Be sure to read the ingredients on the tub!
The Beeswax in a Beard Balm is what helps to provide your long beard with the fix and hold. Beeswax itself is a naturally ingredient and holds many nutritional benefits that will contribute to a happy and healthy beard.
We recommend using only a small dose of Beard Balm at a time, that means using your finger tip to scrape a small dose from your Balm tub and spreading it in your fingers before gently rubbing and distributing the Balm evenly into your long beard.
Washing your long beard
It's important to wash your beard regularly to help remove dirt and impurities that collect in your beard over time. That said, washing your beard too often will remove natural and added oils that your beard has collected, which may dry out your skin and need replenishing. So, how often should I wash my beard?
This varies by individual. It depends on your skin type, hair type and your overall personal choice. As a rough guide, we recommend that you should wash your long beard about as often as you would shampoo your hair. For some people, that means washing your beard is a daily routine, for others it can mean once a week, or even once a month! It completely depends on your personal choice.
Again, we suggest checking the ingredients on your beard shampoo to avoid any nasty chemicals that may damage your skin and your beard in the long run. Keep it natural people!
IS HAVING A LONG BEARD REALLY WORTH IT?
Ok, beards aren't for everyone. But going from clean shaven to growing and developing a masterful, meaty beard is about as close to giving birth as a man will ever get. And it may take about 9 months, too.
In fact, it can take a whole year to grow up to just 15cm of facial hair, being made up of around 30,000 beard whiskers. There's no limit on how long your beard can grow, though. A man's beard can grow up to four times that of his height, quite spectacular! Although I'm not sure we would recommend that look.
It's something you'll be incredibly proud once you get it right, but for some it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of maintenance. You're going to need some proper beard care and some proper patience if you're going to grow a proper beard.
If you're currently clean shaven and you're considering taking on the journey of developing a long beard, it's a long road ahead. But the journey is rewarding and more than worth it. We'd love to see your long beards online, tag us on instagram, twitter or facebook and we'll take a look!
GOOD LUCK
