So, you've got your Safety Razor. You're now paying Pence for blades instead of Pounds (or perhaps Cents instead of Dollars, Tomato Tomato). And yes, you'd never go back to chewing up your face with overpriced cartridges, but you're interested to know if there is a Blade out there that will badger your brush.
Look no further my fresh-faced friends...
Once you have chosen you're Safety Razor, the next step towards a Wet Shaving haven is choosing the right Double Edge Razor blade for you. It's important to get the same quality from your blade as you do from your razor.
As we've mentioned in previous posts, you're guaranteed a better shave from any safety razor blade than you are from disposable junk. That said, there is a huge variety in quality and price of blades available on the market today.
Fine, but how have you ranked your top 5 DE blades?
We have tried, tested and reviewed every double edge razor blade for sale that we could find over a 60 day period. We then cut through the stubble and made a short list of the best Safety Razor blades you can buy.
Unlike other reviews, our table allows you to choose the best blade for you, we also annotate each brand so that whether you're looking for the sharpest, cheapest or smoothest DE blade, we'll give you all the information you need in our top five ranking table.
Are there any other blades worth buying outside of your top 5?
One of the most wonderful aspects of Wet Shaving is variety. From razors to brushes, bowls to blades, there are thousands of choices out there, and not everyone has the same taste.
It's about the right combination, too. That's why our goal is to bring you the best overall shave so that you don't lose quality in other areas, like your shaving soap and brush, for example.
We all want different things out of our morning shave. Whether that be the smoothest, quickest or best value for money, there's a blade out there for everyone.
Is sharpest best?
Not necessarily, but it can be important.
You may want to focus on shaves per blade, or "durability". What good is a blade if you only get one shave from it?
Most importantly, you want a blade that works for you. There's not always a review that can tell you that but we'll do our best to point out the pros and cons of each brand.
The top 5 razor blade table:
So, what is the best double edge razor blade?
We've compiled a list of the top 5 blades rated by sharpness, durability and value. Now it's up to you to choose the best safety razor blade you can buy:
What you need to know:
We didn't want to brush past some of the finer details. So now you've seen our top 5 safety razor blade review, here's some of the more granular points you might want to take note of:
The Shark razor blade edged its way to first place on our rankings table.
It's the stand out choice for us. This stainless steel blade is akin to the jaws of a Great White. This Shark blade will slice through your unwanted strands of facial hair like paper.
Drawbacks? They won't last as long as Feather blades. At such outstanding value for money, this blade gives you more than you need, more than you want. Try them here.
The pinnacle of shaving, the master of blades. Renowned around the world, if you've not shave with Feather, then you have never shaved.
Made in Japan, these blades will glide across your face like the feather wings of a Japanese Sea Eagle. They're so sharp that they're perhaps not for the amateur. They're rather pricey, too, but they do go the distance more than any other blade. The Feather blade narrowly missed out on the top spot but we're struggling to see any genuine drawbacks other than price.
Try them here.
This is where things got tricky for us. Personal skin type and shaving technique comes as much into play as our fingers do on this keyboard.
The Astra blade is known for its sharpness, but it divides opinion more than any other. Why? Irritation. Some found this was the main drawback. You don't want to inhibit your wonderful morning routine with any irritation if you can so avoid it.
A really wonderful blade if it suits your skin type. You can try them here.
4. Derby Extra
Now then, super savers...
If you purchased your Stag Safety Razor to join the spiritual world of wet shaving to save extra pennies in the long run, then the Derby Extra is your blade.
They're less aggressive and not as sharp as the blades in our podium 3 finish, but this often gravitates towards those with sensitive skin. An overall complete blade for the beginner, you won't be sensitive about the price. See how cheap they are here.
5. Wilkinson Sword
The all rounder.
Four centuries of British shaving. Well, they're now manufactured in Germany by Schick. But still, the German steel provides a shave you won't be disappointed by.
Fantastic if you suffer from irritation, we found this blade extra smooth. Not the sharpest of the bunch, but certainly affordable. The German steel uses a synthetic polymer coating, providing both durability and reduced friction.
A strong contender that may not WOW you in any sense, but provides an all round good quality shaving experience. Try them out for yourself here.
Shaving the best 'till last.
We hope this guide has helped you in your quest for your best shave, it certainly has for us. But remember, Wet Shaving is about enjoying your morning routine, don't cut corners. Buy the best blades for your skin.
