Juicing vs blending… which one is better and what is the difference anyway?

Well, let’s start with the incredibly obvious:

You need to get fruits and veggies, period. Okay, glad we could help. Bye!

Okay, maybe you need a little more to go on, but I’m a big believer that you should worry less about getting the exact right form of something healthy, and just gettin’ it in your body.

I hate concepts like “don’t eat after 8pm” or “should I or shouldn’t I skip breakfast” or “swirl your chewed food up in your mouth for maximum nutrient absorption” (yes, I’ve heard that one).

To me, it’s all about getting away from society’s supersized, canola oil, high fructose corn syrup diet. I’m more concerned with you getting rid of the Hamburger Helper and McDonald’s than wringing your hands over what time to eat or what foods to pair together.

We love BOTH juicing and blending at the ERSS household. Either way, you’re getting incredible amounts of fruits and veggies.

But, they do each have their own purpose and it’s incredibly counterproductive to hate on one in favor of the other.

It’s not so much of a “which is better” argument as a question of “they’re both fantastic, but which is right for THIS situation?”

Here’s what we do.

Why Use a Blender?

Blenders are your traditional Blendtecs, Ninjas or Vitamixes or even the discount Osterizer at Target. They all do the same thing: rip up everything you toss in there until it turns into a thick smoothie. Everything you put in gets into your body – and they’re yummy, done right.

In fact, making a smoothie is one of our favorite breakfasts! Unlike a Juice, we toss all sorts of extra goodies into our smoothies (such as peanut butter, cod liver oil, grass-fed gelatin, kombucha, kefir, coconut oil, etc.).

This gives you a more well-rounded nutrient experience than juicing, and it’s usually more calories (in a good way) from the added healthy fats and proteins. That makes it a great start to an energized day, which you’ll need if you’re hitting the gym.

You’re also leaving in all the pulp, which provides a healthy source of Fiber. Think of an orange – you can easily see all the white barriers and structures running throughout the fruit that helps keep its shape. That’s fiber, and it’s great for you to eat. It helps keep your gut healthy and slows down the absorption of sugars (which means less of an insulin shock).

When to Make Smoothies

Smoothies are great for day-to-day meal replacements. If you have trouble eating first thing in the morning, you might be able to drink a meal instead.

I love the well-rounded nutrition of throwing in all the powerhouse stuff we have around the house. Our smoothies usually have 5-7 ingredients, and they’re all superfoods.

Smoothies will keep you full longer and provide more energy – which is why they’re awesome for starting the day right.

Why Use a Juicer?

Seriously, blender sounds pretty good, right? While we don’t use our juicer anywhere near as much as our blender, we use it for a VERY specific purpose and juice cleanses are EASILY our favorite all-around health tool.

Whether you blend or juice, you’re getting the life-changing benefits of more fruits and veggies. People live longer, healthier lives, and are less likely to die from cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, and strokes. The Nutrients, enzymes, phytonutrients, and antioxidants can all help heal your body from the inside out.

So, the more fruits and veggies, the merrier, right?

And juicing lets you take in MUCH more of the nutrients from fruits and veggies than blending. In a single juice, you could have the nutrients from 3 carrots, 3 celery stalks, an apple, and a cucumber – while absorbing up to 70% of the total nutrients. (That’s a little recipe sneak peek from our eBook)

In fact, the sheer amount of goodness in the fruits and veggies heals. For example, there’s the famous Fat, Sick &  Nearly Dead documentary with Joe Cross (watch it on Netflix now!) about why he started an intense juice cleanse after doctors told him he had an “uncurable” disease. We’ve personally seen it help us lose weight, help with arthritis, and even take someone’s blood sugar levels from “diabetic” to “normal.”

But here’s the MAIN reason why juice cleanses work like a charm:

When you consume no fiber for a week, it gives your gut a chance to rest and heal up from the normal grind of digesting your food. In our society, the toxins we take in (and we ALL are exposed toxins), slowly destroy your gut bacteria and hurt the lining of your intestines.

Your damaged gut results in micro-tears, and little bits of undigested food and toxins enter your bloodstream, storing in your soft tissues. Those include joints, fat cells, and even your brain.

A Dedicated Juice Cleanse lets your gut rest and seal back up, but it also sparks your body’s toxin removal systems (because you’re flooding your system with insane amounts of nutrients, antioxidants, and enzymes that heal.)

Your body sheds toxins, which means you can lose weight, fix your arthritis, and even manage the litany of diseases caused by toxin buildup – even the “incurable” ones.

By also consuming juice without the fiber, your body’s getting the most ready-made, absorbable nutrients imaginable. Fiber actually can slow down absorption and even carries some nutrients out with it.

So using a juicer?

It’s definitely more extreme, but we do it with a purpose: healing. Lots and lots of healing.

Cons of Juicing

We love juicing more than anything, but there a few things that can be pesky – especially if you don’t know what you’re doing.

  • Don’t use ONLY fruit in your juices (except first thing in the morning). All that sugar can would be like Godzilla stomping on New York to your blood sugar levels.
  • Juices aren’t as tasty as smoothies usually because you’re not adding goodies like peanut butter, milk, or kombucha.
  • You shouldn’t exercise while doing a dedicated juice cleanse – all part of the “let everything rest and heal.” Plus, you’re not getting as many calories as you normally do.
  • Without fiber, your body will have a hard time expelling the toxins that it’s flushing out of your system.

However, the right blend of herbal supplements can help your body detox better and then expel the junk – without consuming fiber. We also take supplements to help heal your internal organs, shed weight, and jump-start your thyroid. Taken in combination with a juice cleanse? That’s powerful.

Blending or juicing? They both carry their pros and cons, but should you be focusing on making smoothies or juices for maximum health benefits?

Juicing vs. Blending – The Conclusions

They’re both healthy, and if you’re paralyzed by indecision because you don’t know which one to do, just pick the easier one (probably blending).

But also realize that smoothies are part of an overall healthy diet and a great boost to start your day. It’s great for hiding a bunch of spinach or getting in that nasty cod liver oil. We dump grass-fed beef gelatin in ours for a tasteless protein boost.

Juicing is usually done for a longer term and with a specific purpose in mind:

Manage disease, lose weight, or a routine detox for maintenance (once or twice a year).
