Cinnamon Sourdough Pancake Recipe


Did you know that even the Bible talks about sourdough?

Moses (after unleashing the 10 plagues) finally gets the go-ahead from Pharaoh to flee with the enslaved Israelites. They were instructed to make unleavened (unrisen) bread “because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry.”

In other words, they didn’t have the time to feed their sourdough 2-3 times, prepare the bread, and then let it rise another 12-18 hours.

Fascinating, huh?

When we say our ancestors used sourdough, we’re talking thousands of years back. Well before chemical food processing and intense marketing campaigns. Before Bisquick. Back when people ate natural food, in its natural form, prepared in natural ways. There’s something supremely cool about that.

It’s food eaten the way it was meant to be eaten, in the form our bodies recognize and enjoy.

And yes, you’re busy, but keeping a sourdough starter is about the simplest thing around. We’re talking 2-minutes-a-week simple. If you haven’t read our guide on the keeping and troubleshooting a sourdough starter, you might want to take a look. After all… PANCAKES!

It’s our traditional (that’s a bad real foodie pun) Saturday morning breakfast. Just don’t forget to take the starter out of the fridge the night before!

Plus oh-my-gosh… SOURDOUGH? Like have you had sourdough pancakes at a restaurant? Sure those are good, but these are the real thing, people.

And we spice ‘em up, too. There are two cooking hacks to leveling up your pancakes (and not just sourdough ones either):

  1. Cinnamon – adding cinnamon to your pancakes will make your life at least 10% better.
  2. Fry them – if you’ve been deprived of semi-crusted pancakes, then you’re living below your potential as a human. Just slather the coconut oil on your griddle and pour the batter right on top. You’ll thank me later.

Cinnamon Sourdough Pancake Recipe


  • 1 1/2 Cups fresh sourdough starter (pull out of fridge the night before and feed flour and distilled water, cover)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tablespoon raw honey or sucanat
  • 1 Tablespoon melted butter
  • 3/4 Teaspoon unrefined salt
  • 3/4 Teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
  • Coconut oil, for frying


  1. Mix all ingredients together and fry on a 400 degree griddle. Enjoy with butter and real maple syrup!
