Ayurvedic Herb for Thyroid – Kanchnar Guggul: An Introduction

What is Kanchnar Guggul? Kanchnar Guggul is a classical traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation described in Sharangdhar Samhita and Bhaishjya Ratnavali (The Ayurvedic Pharmacological text). It is also known as Kanchanar Guggulu or Kanchanara Gulgulu. The name Kanchnar Guggul possibly seems to have been derived from two main ingredients (Kanchnar and Guggul) used in this preparation. Composition of Kanchnar Guggul Ayurvedic texts described the following composition for Kanchnar Guggul: Kanchnar (Bauhinia variegate) bark, Triphala [Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) fruit rind, Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) fruit rind, Amla (Emblica officinalis) fruit], Ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome, Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) fruit, Long Pepper (Piper longum) fruit, Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) bark, Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) fruit, Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) leaves and bark, and Guggul (Commiphora mukul) resin. Ayurvedic Indications of Kanchnar Guggul Kanchnar Guggul is traditionally indicated in Ayurveda for imbalances of glandular functions and in particular the thyroid gland and release of thyroidal hormones, related obesity, and for skin disorders. Traditionally, it is used as a remedy for sore throat and hemorrhoids.
