November is American Diabetes month and is a time to join hands together to raise awareness against diabetes. Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and another 86 million are at the risk of developing two types of diabetes. The fact revealed by the American Diabetes Association would raise concern among every health conscious person and It’s important to create awareness about this metabolic disease affecting millions across the world. If you’re facing symptoms like frequent urination, intense thrust and hunger, weight gain, unusual weight loss, fatigue it would be wise to visit a doctor and check out your blood glucose level.

Why diabetes occurs?

When the human body stops producing insulin, doesn’t produce enough insulin for proper functioning or if the cells in the body don’t react to insulin then its called diabetes.

What is type 1 and type 2 Diabetes?

CDC (centers for diseases control and prevention) has found an increasing frequency of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes among the teenagers. While ‘researches’ are still underway to find out the causes of type 1 diabetes, genetic  reason, exposure to certain viruses or toxins are regarded as contributing factors. But unhealthy food practices, being overweight; not being physically active may be the reason behind type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes has no cure, but with proper treatment it can be managed to live a longer and healthier life.

Balancing the food you eat

Make healthy food choices avoiding too much of junk and sugary food that raises extra fat within your body leading to obesities. Junk foods wreak unwanted calories and lack essential nutrients. It’s better to keep it out of your daily meal as best as you can and have food rich in nutrients. Having a healthy meal plan and physical activity are key to fighting diabetes.

Being physically active

Being physically active helps reducing extra calories and control blood glucose. Your preference for exercise and outdoor games are of great help in controlling glucose level in your blood.

Stray from stress

Studies have also drawn an analogy between stress and rising blood glucose. So try to avoid unnecessary stress for versatile health benefit.

Great carbs choices

Carbohydrates are the source of energy in our body. But if you take more of potatoes, milk, sweets etc. your blood glucose can increase. To prevent diabetes all you need to do is keep your blood glucose in control. So, opt for Whole grain foods, fresh fruits and green vegetables as a good source of energy instead of whole milk, regular soda, potato, sweets etc.

Keep regular check

Maintain a regular check up of your health and sugar level in your blood. If needed, take insulin according to the advice of a doctor.

Living with diabetes is of course possible since there is no cure for this metabolic disease. Only by balancing diet, continuing exercise and medicines (if prescribed) can help prevent or delay the complications.
