Feb 13, Explaining Medicinal Kratom Use to a Conservative Talkshow Host

I was interviewed yesterday by a radio talk show host in South Florida. It was eye-opening and showed me how misunderstood Kratom is due to the way misinformation about kratom is spread by federal agencies.
The show host, Joyce Kaufman, had earlier interviewed Florida Representative Kristin Jacobs and they got along just great, agreeing that this kratom was a terrible drug and should be regulated, if not totally banned. After all, based on Jacobs' telling of the facts, kratom was even illegal in the country where it grows wild! So, the military dictatorship there must know what is best for their people.
The existing scientific research on kratom was downplayed -- even though it is quite extensive and generally favorable -- as if all we need to know is that the FDA has "banned its import", the DEA is suspicious of kratom (rocket scientists that they are!), and kava bars reminded Joyce Kaufman of the opium dens she had seen in her world travels.
Susan Ash had been scheduled to be on the show, with me standing by as backup, but the show called me and said they weren't able to reach Susan (who later told me she was sitting by her phone the whole time). So, I did the interview and was treated fairly by Joyce Kaufman, who had never heard from the millions of medicinal users' viewpoint. The show should be up later today on podcast.
Joyce Kaufman was shocked to hear that people my age could use kratom moderately to control various chronic diseases without becoming wacked out or addicted. She is sponsored by a drug rehab center, possibly financially invested in it, and the rehab industry is a major source of her information.
The big insight I took away from this brief interview is the myopia that "conservatives" like Joyce and Democrat Kristin Jacobs' share. Conservatives say they want limited government (translation: cut welfare and perhaps corporate pork), but then they support open-ended boondoggles like the Global War On Drugs, which are documented failures and equally wasteful as welfare subsidies.
"Conservatives" have no sympathy for patients like us who aren't satisfied with the pharmaceutical solutions we have been forced to use, before we found kratom. Joyce did have some openness to medical marijuana and the proven benefits it has shown for children and some other small patient populations. Recreational marijuana use was probably disapproved, but we didn't go into that.
Another telling point I made was that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement/Dept. of Health report that was done to assess the potential danger of kratom to the people of Florida said, "Based on its research, FDLE concluded that Kratom does not currently constitute a significant risk to the safety and welfare of Florida residents." I told Joyce this report was requested by Kristin Jacobs in the last legislative session, but she now pretends it doesn't exist.
I'll post a link to the podcast in comments, when it is available (either Saturday or Monday, when it is posted on www.850WFTL.com under Joyce Kaufman.
