Different parts of the mustard plant have been proven beneficial in treating cancer, diabetes & detoxification of the body.
Health benefits of mustard include relief from muscular pains, psoriasis, ringworm, contact dermatitis & respiratory disorders.
It promotes healthy skin & hair, lowers cholesterol & is a wonderful botanical for women during menopause.
It is an effective remedy against scorpion stings & snake bites.
Also toothache, colic, rheumatism & epilepsy can be treated with mustard.
Abscesses, bronchitis, asthma, colds, aches& pains, bladder inflammation, ulcers & various gastrointestinal ailments are uses of mustard seed, often in the form of a mustard plaster or poultice, which is applied topically.
Mustard  can be used in baths to alleviate inflammation, as it helps increase blood flow.

Mustard seeds are good source of omega-3 fatty acids & manganese, iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium as well as phosphorus, copper & vitamin B1.
Mustard seeds are also excellent source of selenium, a trace element that is also thought to have an anti-cancer effect.

It strengthens digestion,particularly 'cold digestion with loose or watery stools & chills' & resolves white or clear lung phlegm.
Use the seeds in a tea or decoction or the whole or ground seeds in food.
Mustard seeds & oils have been used orally & topically as a treatment for gastrointestinal & respiratory disorders; arthritis & other joint-related aches & pains; even as an appetite stimulant.
Bronchitisrespiratory problems can be cured with the help of mustard seeds.
The high source of magnesium in mustard seeds helps reducing the severity of asthma attacks & certain symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis & lowering blood pressure.
Mustard seeds help to restore normal sleep patterns in women having difficulty with the symptoms of menopause, to reduce the frequency of migraine attacks & to prevent heart attack in people suffering from atherosclerosis or diabetic heart disease.

Mustard greens have warming thermal nature,influencing the lungs,tone & moisten the intestines,clear chest congestion,improve energy circulation & dissolve stagnant or congealed blood.
They also reduce cold mucus associated with lung infections.
For colds & coughs use mustard greens in a tea.

Mustard oil stimulates circulation which helps palliate muscular pains & ease stiff muscles.
The oil reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases.
Intake of Mustard oil combined with Turmeric or Garlic will help in relieving muscular & joint pains. Rub the oil or apply it as a poultice to soothe skin irritation.
Use Mustard oil as a bath oil to reduce the effect of colds.
Mustard oil is known to be great for the skin because it generates warmth.
Mustard oil can be used for the treatment of cough & cold, helping in clearing congestion from the respiratory tract.
Mustard oil steam treatment is often recommended as a home remedy & you can also rub about a 1 tsp of it on your chest before sleeping.
Another home remedy is to make a mixture of about 1 tsp warm mustard oil & 3 cloves of garlic & rub it on your feet.
Mustard oil is often applied on skin to prevent or cure fungal infections.

For cough ,chest infections & colds sprinkle into the socks about 1tbsp of mustard powder,leave it on for night.

For joint pains make a paste from mustard powder,salt & vinegar.Place it over the painful area,keep it warm.


People with oily skin should avoid massaging mustard oil on the face & it should also be avoided for body massages for those who have sensitive skin.


You can easily make your own mustard condiment by first macerating the seeds in wine, vinegar or water.
Grind them into a smooth paste, adding herbs & spices such as tarragon, turmeric, garlic, pepper, paprika or any others that you prefer to give your homemade mustard its own unique taste.

Substitute mustard for half the mayo in tuna & potato salads, use 1 tbsp honey mustard on corn on the cob instead of butter, or top baked potatoes with a dollop of whole grain mustard & a dab of sour cream.

For a bad appetite mix a few black mustard seeds with milk & have it 15 - 20 minutes before your meal.

Mustard Tea:

Infuse the seeds in water & let it cool down for 5 minutes.
Take this tea 3x a day to cure bronchitis,colds & fever.

Soothing Bath for Tired Feet:

Place 2 tbsp mustard seeds & 2 l of hot water into a bowl or small bath were you can dip your feet in.
Keep your feet in this hot bath for ca 30 min.
Dry your feet & pull on warm socks.
Reduces pain & settles tired feet.

For Sore Throat:

Mix a bit of lemon juice,
1 tsp salt,
1 tsp honey,
1/2 tsp mustard powder
100 ml warm water
Gargle with it 4-6 times per day.

Sinusitis & Cold:

Dip a small cloth into hot water,squeeze excess water out,sprinkle over the cloth mustard powder,fold it half & place it over your nose/sinuses area.

Bath for back pain,arthritis,sprains:

Sprinkle to the bath water 220 g mustard powder,stir to dissolve completely.
Take a bath for 20 minutes,no longer.

A Mustard Plaster:

Use a piece of cotton or linen cloth at least twice the size required.
Grind mustard seeds, then add 4 times as much all purpose flour & enough cool water to make a paste.
Spread paste onto half the fabric, fold over, if too wet add another layer of cloth, once placed on the affected area this will increase blood circulation, perspiration & heat.
Quantities for the mustard paste will depend on the size of plaster required.
Do not let the paste touch bare skin & do not use for longer than 30 minutes.
Remove & wash well with warm water.
Eases a number of back issues such as sciatica, neuralgia, joint inflammation & rheumatic pain.
They also treat coughs & infections of the chest & lungs.
A mustard plaster works by creating heat, drawing toxins out of the body & by being a source of nutrients that can be absorbed through the skin.

Basic Mustard Recipe:

1/2 cup mustard powder
1/2 cup water
Sea salt to taste

Optional: fresh parsley, chopped
fresh basil, chopped
lemon or lime zest
1-2 tablespoons of your choice of vinegar

In a bowl, combine mustard powder & water & mix until smooth.
Add parsley, basil, lemon or lime zest &/or vinegar, if using.
Let the mustard rest for 15 minutes before using.


Mustard oil is very effective when used in homemade face packs along with cream, turmeric & gram flour. It it helps to heal dry & chapped skin.
Mustard oil is loaded with vitamin E & when applied on the skin, it helps to reduce fine lines & wrinkles & acts as a sunscreen.
It also helps to remove a tan & dark spots when used along with other ingredients to make face masks.
Massage the skin with equal quantities of mustard oil & coconut oil to improve skin tone.

Mustard seeds are rich in sulfur, which is an incredibly effective treatment for the acne & skin infections. It can kill bacteria & fungi really quickly. You should employ the treatment as soon as the first signs of the problem appear in order to avoid scarring.

Mustard oil has oleic acid & linoleic acid which are essential fatty acids that make it a good hair tonic.
Hair massage with this oil to increase blood circulation & promote hair growth.
Mustard oil mixed with powdered fenugreek helps cure dandruff.
Mustard oil or mustard seed paste mixed with mustard oil when applied on the scalp & left overnight can help in controlling hair fall.

Hair Mask:

1 tbsp mustard powder
1 egg yolk
100 ml natural yogurt
Pat this mask over your scalp & keep it for 30 min.
Rinse & wash normally.
This mask strengthens hair,giving a healthy structure & shine,stops hair from falling out.
You can use this mask once a week.

Facial Wash for Aging Skin:

1 tbsp of mustard powder
1 tbsp of dried peppermint leaves
1 cup of water
Pour boiling water over the peppermint leaves & leave to stand for 30 min.
Add mustard powder.
Use this for washing your face,rinse after with cool water.

Try using other herbs in same amount: st.johns wort, nettle leaves, rosemary, calendula, chamomile, birch leaves, linden flowers.


The ancient Chinese considered mustard an aphrodisiac.
German lore advises a bride to sew mustard seeds into the hem of her wedding dress to assure her dominance of the household.
In Denmark & India, it is believed that spreading mustard seeds around the exterior of the home will keep out evil spirits.
In Italy, it was a common folk custom to sprinkle black mustard seeds on the windowsills & thresholds of dwellings to give a protection from ghosts & evil spirits.
If one sprinkles mustard seeds around his bed he will not be troubled by witches.

Home Protection:

That no dark entity does not settle in the house, put under the mat in front of the entrance door seeds of mustard & say:
"He who soweth, he will gather, not one evil shall enter into this house, in reverse turn, to another threshold will go."
Put a white thread in the needle.
Tie the ends to three knots.
Carry the needle with the tip of the entire door jamb.
Stick on the right in the top part of a jamb & to tell:
"This needle on the guard to stand,
all enemies & bad people to beat".
