Winner of Rs 6.4 Lakh on KBC, Man Feeds Hearty Meals to The Needy for Just Rs 5!

Assam-based tuition teacher Binita Jain made headlines after winning one crore rupees on the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. From losing her husband to terrorists to raising her kids by teaching 125 students, her story moved thousands across the nation.

This time, yet another hot seat contestant is in the news. It is none other than Faridabad-based Davinder Singh.

No, Davinder did not become a crorepati. He won Rs 6,40,000.

Still wondering why he’s in the limelight?

Well, this story goes beyond the play of numbers. Instead, it sheds light on the journey of the man who has been running a kitchen out of his Innova car to feed meals to the underprivileged every Saturday for just Rs 5.

The Sector-28 resident is a computer engineer, who spoke about his initiative ‘Aap Ki Rasoi’ on the show, impressing host and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan. He added how he charges a meagre amount so that people don’t feel like they are being fed for charity. Further, those who cannot afford the amount are also distributed food free of cost, said Davinder.

As a child, he would watch the elderly being taken care of in gurudwaras. This helped him understand how serving food to the hungry was a form of service.

Speaking to Big B, Davinder Revealed how, while working with Infosys, in Pune, he would often carry food for kids at the Saraswati Orphanage. One incident that particularly shook him was the death of two children due to starvation in Delhi in 2006.

He began to think about ways to help not just the distressed and hungry children but also people from economically-weaker sections. His older brother Gurvinder Singh, his parents–Satnam Kaur and Manmohan Singh, wife Navneet Kaur and friend Karna, came forward to help him conceptualise and execute ‘Aap Ki Rasoi’. The sole idea of which was to feed the hungry on the streets of the city at a meagre price of Rs 5.

Davinder’s family cooks food every Friday night, which is then served to the hungry in various parts of the city on the following Saturday. Each person is served two vegetables, four rotis and rice.

After his win at KBC, speaking to Hindi Daily Navbharat Times, Davinder revealed how his phone has been ringing off the hook. These calls are not only congratulatory messages but also offers of support in distributing food from Aap Ki Rasoi.

We hope many more people join the changemaker and help fight the battle against hunger by extending or replicating Davinder’s charitable model. We wish the family the very best!
