Two years ago, the Delhi Police entered the Limca Book of Records for solving one of the largest cash robbery cases in India. On 27 November 2015, they tracked down the driver of a cash transit van – who drove away with over Rs. 22.50 crore.
But 6th February 2018, could have recorded an even more significant heist – by a massive margin. Indeed, it could have become India’s biggest robbery – amounting to a staggering Rs 925 crore!
But that did not happen – thanks to the quick thinking and courage of Jaipur cop Sitaram, who saved the day.
On Tuesday, around 2:30 am, 13 miscreants in masks and with gunny bags reached the Axis Bank at Ramesh Marg in C-Scheme in Jaipur. After stopping their four-wheeler outside the main gate of the building, two of them kept an eye out for any authorities, while the rest jumped over the gate and into the premises.
Once inside, they held the deployed security guard at gunpoint and attempted to reach a chest packed with Rs 950 crore in cash. The robbers were apparently unaware that four armed personnel were already posted for the security of the chest.
Of the four cops, three were in different parts of the premises, whereas Constable Sitaram was close by. As soon he realised what was going on, he confronted the robbers – by opening fire. Apparently shocked by the shot, the robbers fled, as reported by the DNA.
Sitaram’s shot hit a window on the building opposite the bank.
“Sitaram quickly alerted the police control room, and within no time, police teams reached the spot. Barricading was immediately ordered across the city. However, there was no sign of the miscreants. A manhunt has been launched for them,” officials told DNA.

It is important to note that the chest is not in use for routine client dealings but for collecting and sending money from various Axis Bank branches and a few ATMs.
CCTV footage from the building and the neighbourhood have been acquired by the police, who are studying it for any traces of the robbers.
But nonetheless, we salute constable Sitaram for his presence of mind and immediate action!
