New Lightweight & Economic Iron Press Runs on LPG Instead of Coal

In contrast to the electrical and lightweight Iron which is used in homes, the dry coal iron Press used by most service providers on shops and streets is known to have hazardous effects on users, because they inhale the fumes emitted by it, for a prolonged duration.

However, an innovation by the IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) could help tackle this situation by replacing the coal pieces with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to power an iron press!

Plugged into an LPG cylinder, the specially designed press is not only eco-friendly but also an economical device that can iron more clothes at a go when compared to its cruder counterpart.

The first such device was distributed by IOC to SN Laundry, an ironing shop run by Jyothi Ranjith in Kochi, reports Mathrubhumi, a local daily.

The contraption is devised in such a way such that one can control the warmth of the press with a regulator fixed on it. The fuel is routed to the press from the cylinder through a small and secured pipe. Also, the press is secured, and one cannot view the fuel burning inside.

A 5kg cylinder is used for the press and does not have to be booked separately. While the cost of a single cylinder is ₹300, the entire contraption is priced around ₹7000 and weighs about 6kg. The authorities expect that the cost will come down once the product becomes popular and more accessible.

“It is more useful for ironing shops. These iron boxes will have more heat than those powered by electricity,” said CP Unnikrishnan, the Deputy General Manager of IOC.
