In a unique initiative, several government schools in Uttar Pradesh are all set to get Kitchen Gardens in the academic year 2018-19.

The concerned midday meal authorities have been asked to make a list of government schools in Uttar Pradesh where planting a Garden is possible, and the schools where such an initiative has already been implemented by the teachers.

The midday meal authority officials have been called for a meeting regarding the budget plan in Lucknow on Friday, January 7, 2018.

Virendra Kumar is the Meerut divisional midday meal coordinator, and speaking to the Times of India he said, “The information we have sought includes the total number of institutions, total institutions where setting up of a garden kitchen is possible, those institutions that already have kitchen gardens, those where kitchen gardens are in the process of being set up, and the number of institutions where setting up of kitchen garden is proposed during 2018-19.”

Meerut district has 1342 schools which include 910 primary schools and 432 upper primary schools. Kitchen gardens will potentially yield a healthier supply of materials for the school kids. It will also ensure greener surroundings for the children and fresh air to breathe.

“The former divisional commissioner, Alok Sinha, had asked to grow Moringa trees in the schools of Meerut because they are almost entirely edible. However, the plantation could not be carried out due to some departmental issues. Since the authorities have planned to set up kitchen gardens here, efforts will be made to plant these trees too,” Kumar told TOI.

Similar initiatives have already been undertaken in Haryana and Karnataka.
