CEO Gives an Unexpected Boost to Single Mom Running a Food Truck

So much can happen in 140 characters! On December 29, 2017, Jeanette Rodrigues, a journalist working in Bloomberg LP, tweeted about Shilpa, an enterprising woman who converted a Mahindra Bolero into a food truck.

Jeanette tagged Mr Anand Mahindra, the CEO of the Mahindra Group, in the tweet, and what followed will in many ways restore your faith in humanity.

Having started her business amidst a lot of hardship in 2015, Shilpa has come a long way since then. She initially applied for a loan for a new car, which attracted the ire of many who said she was taking a somewhat unnecessary risk. Short of finances, Shilpa reluctantly withdrew a Rs 1 lakh deposit that she had set aside for her son’s education and bought a Mahindra Bolero pick-up truck and then set-up her standalone food joint, reports The Indian Express.

The eatery that operates between 4 pm and 10 pm is visited by a large number of people every day and yields a daily turnover of Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000.

“Nearly 80% of my clients are locals from Dakshina Kannada. Then there are doctors, students, or IT professionals who are looking for home food,” Shilpa says. A few tech-savvy student patrons have even mapped Shilpa’s food truck on the Google search engine, giving it an online visibility, as reported by The News Minute.

While some tweeted saying the money would have helped Shilpa, Anand Mahindra tweeted saying, “I don’t think she wants or needs my charity. She is a successful entrepreneur. I am offering to invest in her expansion.”

With over 6.1 million followers, Anand Mahindra is known to be a social media savvy CEO. He not only tweets about the developments and events in his company but also posts inspirational quotes, about films and politics.

With entrepreneurs like this, we sure are on the right path.
