How to Heal Acne Scarring

By Bridget Webber

If your Skin is scarred by acne, chances are that you are fed up and frustrated. No doubt, you will have struggled to get rid of acne in the first place, but instead of obtaining relief, you have discovered that your skin still reflects where acne once was and is darker in these areas. It may also be pitted, depending on the severity of the acne you once had.

The best way to treat your skin will depend on its condition, as light Scarring may be healed with natural treatments, but deeper scarring is likely to require treatment such as dermabrasion. If you are unsure about which steps to take to clear your skin from acne scars, talk to your doctor. He or she will be able to look at your skin and recommend the best way forwards for you personally. However, the following are gentle treatments that may help you, followed by a brief description of treatments for more severe scarring.

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter can help fade scars and heal skin, making it softer and smoother. However, it is not recommended if you still suffer from acne, as it can cause breakouts.

Lemon juice

Lemon juice can lighten skin darkened by acne scarring and fade scars. It will also help balance the PH level of your skin and prevent breakouts.

Honey

Honey is a great skin healer, as it lessens redness and irritation and kills bacteria. It can even the tone of your skin, reduce pimple size and leave your skin soft.

Vitamin E cream

Vitamin E cream moisturizes scars, which can help to heal them. It is available over the counter, and can be purchased in large tubs or bottles.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is good for healing skin, while pimples are present, to help prevent scarring in the first place.

Other types of treatments may be recommended by your doctor, including chemical peels. These remove the tops layers of skin where acne scars reside. Alternatively, microdermabrasion may be suggested. Microdermabrasion removes the dead layer of skin cells that lay on the top of skin. If scarring is deeper, laser treatment may be required.

Punch techniques are used when scarring is very deep and skin is extremely pitted. In such a case, scarred skin may be removed and resculpted. Another way to improve skin with deep scars can be to use derma fillers. Instead of removing acne scars, they raise them, so that the skin is level with surrounding areas and pitting is less noticeable.

It can be upsetting to be left with acne scars that reduce your self-confidence regarding your appearance. Taking measures to improve your skin and heal acne-scarring, can make a big difference to how you look and feel.
