10 Tips To Keep Your Feet Healthy

Keep your feet clean and dry

washing and cleaning your feet

Check your feet on a daily basis and thoroughly clean and scrub them with soap and warm water and dry them well. Fungal organisms love moisture, so to prevent them by drying your feet always making sure you’re drying in between each individual toe because any excess moisture between the toes can create an environment for a fungal infection to take hold.

Examine your feet for problems

You should perform a foot self-exam once a week while taking a bath or shower. After drying off your feet, take a good look at your feet. Especially on the soles for any scaling and between your toes. Also pay attention for any discoloration of the nails, which could indicate a Nail fungus.

Diabetes patients

If you have diabetes you need to pay more importance to your feet. If you’re suffering from diabetes inspect your feet every day because you have a higher risk of foot sores and infections.

Cut toenails properly

Always cut your toenails straight across and avoid trimming them too close to the skin. Don’t cut them drastically round in the corners of the nail which can be quite painful!

Applying nail polish to an infected nail

If you have an ugly discolored toenail don’t hide it with nail polish. A discolored, thick, and cracked nail could signal a nail fungus. Putting nail polish on an infected toe can only make the fungus worse.

Protect your feet in public areas

Always wear shower shoes at the gym, in locker rooms, and at public because these places tend to be breeding ground for fungi leading to infections. So, protect your feet in public areas.

Avoid sharing shoes

You can also get fungal infections by wearing friends shoes or socks. Always wear your own shoes to keep your feet healthy. Plus… that’s just gross.

Choose breathable footwear

If you want to keep your feet healthy and dry, wear shoes that are made of leather. Leather allows air to circulate to your feet. You can also wear shoes which are made of mesh fabrics for maximum breathing if you are prone to excessively sweaty feet.

Wear shoes that fit properly

Shoes that are tight can cause long-term foot problems.  Always wear a broad and rounded shoe with plenty of room for your toes and a wide stable heel. Avoid shoes that cramp your toes and can cause ingrown toenails and calluses.

When to see a doctor

Don’t try to self-treat your painful foot woes. Any pain, redness, swelling that persists should be checked out by a podiatrist. Most of the time the problem can be cleared up with prescription medicine or a minor in-office procedure.
