Building Your Online Presence: Step 2

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

You created your website and you might be thinking to yourself "That's it I'm done, I have built my site now I don't need to do anything else with it." That is very wrong you need to do a lot more with your site to make sure that Google and all of the other search engines have indexed your site and then you need to boost the rank of your web page by sharing it in as many places as possible without getting spammy. Here are the steps you need to take to ensure you get a higher rank.
Search Engine Optimization

Steps to start building up to SEO

  1. Submit your site to Google and Bing. You do this by going to what they call Webmaster Tools. You will need to add code to your site in order for this to work. You can Google the exact how-to but you just need to create a Webmaster account for both Google and Bing.
  2. Create an Analytics Account on both Google and Bing. This wy you can track your traffic. This doesn't do anything for SEO but you should be paying attention to where you traffic is coming from, and how much traffic you're getting. This is much easier to set up than the Webmaster Tools so don't be afraid to do this.
  • Getting into the details of Google Analytics is a whole other animal that as of right now is not something I am that good at.
  • List your business profile with either a paid provider or a free version. If you have all the documents you need saying that you are a business, like an official document from your Town or City. I would suggest using Acxiom. It's a free service that offers a pretty good database of listings it puts your business in. I would pay for it once you are 100% certain that you will be open for a few more years. These services can range a couple hundred bucks a year.
  • List your website on all of your social media platforms. Then link your website to your social media platforms. Then get into the habit of linking your website to most of your post that you make for people to click back your site. The most traffic you get going into your site from multiple locations is how you build your SEO.
  • One of the reasons why a blog is so helpful in boosting SEO is because a blog is always updated. Every new post is an update, the Google Spiders love this and will visit a Blog regularly. You want to list your site on sites that are not collecting dust. Let's say you have your buddy gave a link on his site back to yours but then he hasn't touched or updated his site in ages. He hasn't listed it anywhere or anything. You have technically done nothing for your SEO. You can start your own blog this way Google always visits and updates your site automatically.
  • Coding and Content are extremely important here. You don't need to be a programmer but you need to make sure the little things are taken care of. Titles of web pages (code) should be correctly labeled to what is on your site or that particular page. Words (content) within each page should also be clear and use proper grammar. You don't need to get crazy and add words just to be wordy. They need to make sense to what you are doing. Pictures can have a title and alternative text (code) search engines look at this as well so make sure you label every picture correctly and simply. It all comes down to content and how people use it. Google looks and measures everything! Play by the rules and they will rank you well.
  • There are a lot more advanced tricks that you can do but this is the easy stuff and a great foundation to start building up your SEO. You also need to make sure your site can be SEO friendly. Sometimes you may need to input certain code directly into your site. If you cannot do this you should stop paying for that site and move to a better platform.
