ATRI Reveals Their Top Priorities This 2018

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) develops a list of topics to research every year, and has disclosed its top priorities this year.

Its board of directors has approved the list identified by their Research Advisory Community.

This was discussed during their first meeting in Dallas last March and was approved during last week’s meeting.

The list was carefully crafted and is made to better accommodate trucks in the US.

The priorities topics include critical issues starting from CDL Testing, marijuana policy and autonomous technology and cannabis testing are just one among the priorities.

Urban Planning topped the list of the research priority.

The institution wants to examine how “smart city design approaches” can be integrated into urban planning. and where truck freight delivery can be effectively incorporated into urban planning, and also smart city design approaches. The use of electronic logs and other apps for the design would be very handy..

ATRI also had their eye on Assessing the Consistency and Accuracy of commercial Motor Vehicle Crash Data – In this research their aim is to identify ways to improve the commercial motor vehicle crash data collection, quality, data management and data submission at both local and state levels.

Another one is the Role and Impact of Government Regulations on Autonomous Vehicles – The research will assess the positive and negative impact of regulations being promulgated at the state-level for identification of model legislation on how autonomous technologies and vehicles should be deployed.

They will also take a look at the Inconsistencies in CDL Testing and review the range of requirements for CDL testing across states and identify best practices to develop an effective set of testing requirements.

In addition, they will also check on Autonomous Impacts on the Truck Driver, a comprehensive analysis of how the operational environment, as well as driving requirements, can be changed by autonomous truck technology for commercial drivers.

Lastly, the Best Practices for Cannabis Intoxication Testing will be highlighted by exploring best practices in the U.S. and abroad, the research will benchmark recommended maximum intoxication levels and identify recommendations for driver sobriety testing.

“Good Policy is based on good data,” ATA spokesman Sean McNally said. He also mentioned that the quality data they needed to support their work was produced by ATRI’s research.

Their research recommends safety and pro-trucking programs across the country.

Autonomous technology is highlighted on ATRI’s list. Studying the role of the state government and identifying what they can do to support will definitely improve the regulations on autonomous vehicles.

This technology, such as tracker log book is required by ELD mandate for some reasonable factors that would help a smart city plan especially by preventing Vehicular Accidents.

What’s next?

The research topic mentioned will complement other work ATRI has published which includes “Framework for Infrastructure Funding” released in November.“They really do cover the landscape,” Brewster said. “We need to make sure trucking is part of that conversation.”

These critical topics made abuzz online and are something that people will follow each step of the way. It is expected that the public will know the progress through consistent updates from the media especially those who will be affected if there will be any changes that will be implemented in the current process in relation to ELD mandate.   For now, everybody is just hoping for the best and smooth implementation of the said projects.
