Renault-Nissan Working Towards Reaching Carbon Neutrality In India By 2045

Renault Nissan Automotive Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) has made significant progress toward its 2045 Carbon Neutrality goal, which was announced in February 2023.

The company has outlined a roadmap consisting of three key pathways to achieve carbon neutrality: increasing the use of green Energy, improving energy efficiency, and adopting energy-efficient technology at its Oragadam plant.

Powering Operations With Green Energy

RNAIPL has already reduced CO2 emissions by 87,500 tons annually as of the fiscal year 2022-23. The company currently sources around 60% of its electricity from renewable sources such as solar, biomass, and wind. To further enhance its clean energy commitment, RNAIPL plans to expand its in-house solar plant capacity from 2.2MW to 14MW by 2026.

This will be achieved through the installation of rooftop solar panels and innovative floating solar panels on the plant’s pond. The company aims to meet 85% of its energy needs with renewable power by 2030 and transition to 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Water Positive by 2030

Additionally, RNAIPL is focused on becoming water positive by 2030. The plant already relies on rainwater harvesting and water recycling infrastructure, meeting 85% of its total water needs. To further enhance water efficiency, the company plans to upgrade plumbing designs, conduct water audits, and implement stringent monitoring.

By 2030, RNAIPL aims to reduce water usage by 21% compared to FY 2022-23 levels. The company also plans to rejuvenate 10 lakes and ponds and explore opportunities to create new water bodies and groundwater recharging pits within the community.

Plant-wide Energy Efficiency Initiatives

RNAIPL is actively working on replacing single-use plastic items with eco-friendly alternatives within the plant, in line with government norms. The company has also implemented various energy efficiency initiatives, resulting in a 36% reduction in energy use since the start of car production in FY 2010.

By 2030, the plant aims to reduce the energy required to manufacture a car by 20% (compared to the 2019 energy baseline) and further reduce it by 30% by 2045.

By implementing its comprehensive roadmap, RNAIPL is confident in achieving its 2030 sustainability goals and ultimately becoming carbon neutral by 2045. The company’s commitment to energy and resource reduction, renewable energy integration, and technological advancements positions it as a leading player in sustainable manufacturing.
