BMW Unveils the 8th Generation of 5-series Sedan

After a month of new E-class unveiling, BMW has revealed the first details of the new generation of the 5-Series sedan. The new 8th generation of the 5-series is codenamed the G60. This sedan will be available in Petrol, Diesel, Plug-in Hybrid and the i5 fully electric version.

The newly unveiled BMW 5-series is an evolution of its previous generation model. The 8th generation model of the 5-series has a conventional design like its older versions. Upfront, the sedan features a mammoth kidney grille, sleek headlights, and a huge air dam with gloss black inserts. The overall design of this car is modern and upmarket with flush door handles, sportier bumpers, and sleek LED taillights.

The dimensions of this car are larger than the previous generation model. For instance, the 8th generation 5-series is approx. 85mm longer, 33mm wider and 33mm taller than the outgoing model. Furthermore, the wheelbase has been increased to 20mm resulting in more legroom for rear passengers. And the drag coefficient of this car is 0.23.

The new generation BMW 5-series features the latest twin-screen display, like the 3-series, M2 and new 7-series. The display features an updated i-drive 8.5 system from the i7. However, the screen size is like other BMW models which stand at 12.3 inches for the cluster and 14.9 inches for the infotainment system.

The latest generation BMW 5-series is brimmed with a long list of equipment, multiple finishes for seating and interior trim. The carmaker claims that the interior of the new generation 5-series will be entirely vegan.

Platform and Powertrain

The new generation BMW 5-series will be based on the new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform. This platform shares its underpinnings with other BMW models with longitudinally mounted engines and electric powertrains. The new generation 5-series will be sold with many variants like 520i, 520d, 520d Xdrive, 530e and 550e Xdrive. The 530e and 550e Xdrive are the Plug-in Hybrid variants and other variants are powered by regular combustion engines.

The base 520i trim will have a 2.0L petrol engine under its hood packed with 205hp of maximum power output. Meanwhile, the 520d trim will have the 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 197hp of power output. The 530e will have a 2.0L petrol engine mated to a Plug-in hybrid setup for 299hp of power. However, the 550xe will be the most powerful Plug-in hybrid variant of the 5-series with a 3.0L engine making 489hp of power.

Launch Timeline and Other details

BMW 5-series has been a strong contender in the market giving a fair fight to the Mercedes-Benz E-class. As per the sources, the carmaker will introduce the long-wheelbase version of the 8th generation 5-series to India. The 8th generation BMW 5-series will make its way to India by next year.
