Xiong Qi, A Taiwan Compatriot in Xiamen: Witnessing the “Big Era” and Embracing the “Big Stage”

“Xiamen is a very inclusive city. I feel like home here. This is my second hometown.” Xiong Qi, assistant director of Taiwan compatriots in Xinglong community, Huli District, Xiamen City, said.

Xiong Qi, who has lived in the mainland for 26 years, has witnessed the economic take-off of the mainland and the exchanges and development between Fujian and Taiwan.

Xiamen is located in the forefront of exchange between the mainland and Taiwan, with prominent geographical advantages. Xiong Qi still clearly remembers that in 1996, he crossed the Strait to Xiamen to open a factory and engage in the traditional motor manufacturing industry. At that time, the population of the mainland had reached 1.2 billion, and the business opportunities were great.

At first, Xiong Qi devoted himself to his work and returned to Taiwan every time she took a vacation. In 2004, Xiong Qi and his wife moved to Xinglong community, Huli District, Xiamen City in order to feel the life in Xiamen. At that time, nearly 1000 Taiwan compatriots lived in Xinglong community, and this also opened a new chapter of his life.

During his life in the community, Xiong Qi took the initiative to participate in the daily work of the community neighborhood committee.

“Taiwan started community governance relatively early, and some concepts are relatively mature.” Xiong Qi often communicates with the staff of the neighborhood committee and shares with everyone the concept of community governance he knows in Taiwan.

In 2013, Xiong Qi became the first assistant director of Taiwan compatriots in the mainland. The community is a big family, and it is inevitable that residents will clash over trivial matters. At this time, everyone will find Xiong Qi to settle. After a long time, this Taiwan compatriot assistant who convinced people with reason has become a “red man” in the community.

In 2015, Xiong Qi established “Xiong Qi Mediation Studio”. Under his promotion, Xinglong community has successively promoted the establishment of 11 associations, enabled residents to actively participate in community governance and promoted Taiwan compatriots to integrate into the community through various volunteer activities. In December 2017, Xinglong community was also rated as the “Fujian grassroots exchange demonstration site for Taiwan”, so that Taiwan compatriots can fully feel the warmth of home.

On July 31, 2018, Xiong Qi’s studio hung the plaque of “Xiong Qi Studio, member of the CPPCC Committee of Huli District, Xiamen City”. He became busier and busier, becoming a bridge for communication and coordination between residents on both sides of the Xinglong community and even Huli district.

Over the years, Xiamen has made every effort to build the “first stop” for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises to land in the first home, and the core area leading area of the cross-strait integrated development demonstration area. In recent years, Huli District, the central city of Xiamen, has gathered thousands of Taiwan businessmen who work, start businesses, settle down and live here. Like Xiong Qi, more and more Taiwan compatriots have taken the initiative to participate in community governance.

Looking back on the past, Xiong Qi feels lucky to step on the drum of the times and become one of the many “trendsetters”.

Over the years, Xiong Qi has accumulated a lot of knowledge and experience in intellectual property in the process of managing the factory. He hopes to do more in cross-strait intellectual property exchanges in the future.

“I have a dream to witness the ‘great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation’. I believe it will be realized.” Xiong Qi said.
