Super Bowl season is back, which means it’s time for marketers everywhere to speculate about the best ads we’ll see this year. But as we look ahead to the spots launching in 2022, what can we learn from the best Super Bowl commercials in recent history? The big game has seen its fair share of iconic ads since 2000, with several that will live on in pop culture for years to come.

So, as we wait to find out which company will create the winning ad for 2022, enjoy this roundup of the six best Super Bowl Ads of the 2000s.

E*Trade “Monkey” – 2000

Starting the list strong with E*Trade’s spot from the turn of the century, this monkey ad poked fun at the outrageous expense associated with Super Bowl ads. The message is simple: spending $2,000,000 on a money dancing , and there are better ways to spend $2,000,000—like investing using E*Trade’s platform. Today, E*Trade uses its signature baby in its Super Bowl ads, but the monkey spot has earned its place in the Super Bowl ad hall of fame.

Bud Light “Satin Sheets” – 2002

Bud Light’s commercials are a Super Bowl staple, with the brand putting out a record number of Super Bowl ads between 2010 and 2020—26 total spots. With roughly two commercials per game, it’s no surprise that several of the ads have been big winners. Snickers “Betty White” – 2010

The late, great Betty White graced the Super Bowl with her presence in this 2010 Snickers ad, which poked fun at her old age and inability to perform on the football field. Only Betty White could have played this part with the perfect balance of humor and intensity, and her performance has led to this spot’s staying power. Snickers knew what it was doing with this one.

Volkswagen “The Force” – 2011

In 2011, Volkswagen took the coveted “best ad of the game” title with this nod to Star Wars. Using “The Force” to point out the car’s remote start feature, the brand was able to bring a fresh perspective to the auto ad space. Plus, it gave viewers a chance to tap into their childhood curiosity and remember what it was like to connect with their imaginations. Check it out!

Budweiser “Puppy Love” – 2014

Budweiser is another mainstay of the Super Bowl commercial space, with a solid 18 commercials between 2010 and 2020. This “Puppy Love” spot is arguably the most memorable. Budweiser knew that viewers couldn’t resist watching the bond between a new puppy and a Budweiser Clydesdale, and their feel-good love story stole the show in 2014’s game.

Always “Like a Girl” – 2015

Last but not least, Always used its 2015 Super Bowl ad to further its mission to boost confidence in young girls and women. By highlighting how young girls don’t have the perception that doing something “like a girl” is an insult, the commercial helped reframe the phrase by turning it into a positive affirmation instead. For many viewers, this spot left an especially meaningful impression.
