Foods to Treat Your Sore Throat

A Sore Throat may not appear to be a major health issue, but it causes immense discomfort and makes it difficult to speak and eat. Here is a list of a few foods that will help you to treat sore throat and relieve your pain.

  1. Ginger: It is a root that works as an antioxidant to prevent pain, inflammation and bacterial growth. It also has an antinausea property. For best results, you can combine ginger with honey.
  2. Honey: It fights bacterial and viral infections. However, it also contains sugar content which can prevent the immune function from working effectively. Hence, it should be consumed in a limited quantity.
  3. Potatoes: The skin of the potato contains magnesium, vitamin C and antioxidants. All of these nutrients promote a strong immune system. Hence, you should not remove the skin of potatoes. It would be great to mash them before eating so that it does not cause any further throat irritation.
  4. Oatmeal: It is high in fibre, magnesium, zinc and antioxidants. It is easy to swallow oatmeal because of its soft texture, and its nutrients help you to remove toxins from your body and cure sore throat.
  5. Smoothies: Smoothies which are made up of low sugar and high antioxidant ingredients such as berries, kale, or celery, boost the immune system and cure sore throat. You can also add fruits to your smoothies, such as orange or tangerine, to increase vitamin C.
  6. Yogurt: It is rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. They boost the immune system by providing probiotic bacteria to it. In addition, its cool and soft texture makes it easy to swallow and does not cause more pain.
  7. Eggs: Eggs contain vitamins D and B 12, zinc, iron and selenium. All these nutrients fight infection and cure the throat. Furthermore, scrambled eggs are easy to eat.

Besides the above-mentioned foods, you should also consume foods such as warm, cooked pasta, including macaroni & cheese, gelatin desserts, cooked vegetables, broth and cream-based soups, milk, non-acidic juices and popsicles. You can also try a few tips such as gargling with salt water, taking a rest, drinking warm and herbal tea and staying hydrated.

If your sore throat is not curing on its own despite the healthy diet, then you should consult a doctor. Mostly sore throat occurs due to viral or bacterial infections such as flu or strep throat.
