Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a devastating disease not only for those diagnosed, but also for their families. There is currently no cure for AD. Brain cell connections slowly degenerate and die, destroying memory and other important mental functions. As the disease progresses, patients lose the ability to recognize friends and family, short and/or long-term memory and even the ability to remember how to perform simple tasks; it is a terrifying journey for those suffering, as it is for those closest to them. Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been proven to have neuroprotective, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. Previous studies have shown CBD treatment can reverse Alzheimer’s Disease’s cognitive deficits in mice, both in vitro and in vivo. Those exciting results have prompted further research to evaluate the effects of CBD on Alzheimer’s Disease. Neuroscientists of Australia’s School of Medical Sciences conducted a study in 2014 to study the effects of CBD at preventing Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms in mice. AD mice were treated with CBD daily from 2.5 months of age until 8 months. The CBD-treated AD mice and untreated AD mice were then evaluated on a series of tests such as social preferences, mazes and recognition. The untreated AD mice demonstrated a social recognition deficit, which was not apparent in the CBD-treated AD mice. Researchers stated that their “findings provide the first evidence that CBD may have potential as a preventative treatment for AD with a particular relevance for symptoms of social withdrawal and facial recognition.” The neuroscientists also noted that the CBD-treated mice showed reduced neuroinflammation, cholesterol and dietary phytosterol retention, which may trigger separate studies to further investigate other possible benefits of CBD therapy. The possibility of preventing the onset or advancement of Alzheimer’s Disease is certainly exciting for both the medical community and those living with the disease.
