OMS in the SAP Print Environment

We are frequently contacted by customers facing print/output workflow limitations with their SAP system. So we thought we would write a high level summary of the SAP Print situation. While the base SAP spooling process can provide basic delivery to print devices it has severe limitations if the need is for load balancing, automated fail-over, format transformations, label print management, confirmed delivery, error notification, pull print, print statistics and other advanced functions.

The SAP spool system is responsible for the output of all forms and documents. Sap Print jobs data are first temporarily stored (“spooled”), and usually when de-spooled into an output request, transferred to a “host spool system” or the printer itself. Host systems could be remote or local, Windows, Unix, Linux, or other operating systems. Users would not need to arrange further processing in the host spool system usually, and can see the status of print jobs in their SAP UI, but in this case status means jobs sent to the native host spool system – not the actual printed status as from the printer itself. This process works for basic print functions and users can see the status of print jobs in their SAP UI. Benefits of an External Output Management System

In a basic SAP system, end point delivery is left up to the host systems’ basic print spooler. These systems lack many of the abilities that enterprise business need in situations where print drives a business process. This is why SAP has the ability to configure the print job output to SAP Certified OMS systems. To this end SAP has provided OMS vendors like Plus Technologies a supported interface to add advanced print software to the SAP environment. This certified/supported SAP interface is called BC-XOM. Vendors that want to offer OMS solutions must be certified by SAP through a rigorous testing process.
