The Top 4 Things to Look for When Choosing a Hybrid Learning Tool

Once you’ve decided that Hybrid Learning is the right choice for your organization, you’ll need to bring the right technology into your business to help you implement your programs.  This technology enables hybrid learning to take place and is the hub for everything when it comes to employee development.  As such, it’s important that you choose the right tool for the job.

Here are the four key components of any good hybrid learning solution:

  • Adaptive Learning Journeys.  One of the most powerful pieces of hybrid learning is its flexibility and so it’s crucial that your tool can support personalized learning journeys for each employee that flex and change depending on skill level, performance, role, or a range of other factors.  You can’t just use a cookie-cutter approach, your tool must be adaptive to the input it’s getting from the user.
  • In-Built Assessment Functionality.  One of the objectives of hybrid learning is to shorten the feedback loop which makes for better learning, but this only works if you have a comprehensive assessment function built into the tool that can facilitate interactive quizzes, tests, and other forms of evaluation.  It should be a seamless part of the process, gathering data to assist the user themselves, but also to feedback to the company that is running the training.
  • Media Agnostic.  A good hybrid learning tool will be able to handle all sorts of media formats including written text, video, audio, and any interactive capabilities that might be useful as a training method.  Only by combining these different formats into one standalone tool, you can craft a highly immersive and effective learning environment that truly engages employees.
  • Responsive.  A good tool should be accessible across a wide range of devices and should be compatible and responsive regardless of how you choose to access the content.  This is especially important because staff members are likely to engage with the content in various ways and you need to ensure that no one is disadvantaged because of the device they have access to.

Those are some of the components that are most important in your hybrid learning tool.  On the other side of the coin, here are some of things that you should be watching out for:

  • Vanity metrics.  Many tools will tout their analytics capabilities and give you hundreds of different configurations of data that seems very impressive.  But be careful about vanity metrics that don’t really tell you anything important but simply act as a distraction.  Every piece of data should inform something, otherwise it is just a red herring.
  • Faux personalization.  Many will claim that their tool allows for complex adaptive learning, but when you dig below the surface, all you find is a few simple decision trees.  Don’t get caught up in the buzzwords, do your research and make sure that the tool offers what it claims to offer.
  • Inability to integrate with in-person coaching.  Some tools are so digitally focused that they don’t integrate well with in-person instruction.  This goes against the ethos of the hybrid model and will cause more headaches than is necessary.

Some of the biggest names in the industry like Inno-Versity, AllenComm, Learning Pool, and Obsidian Learning have built tools that aim to capture the magic of hybrid learning and bring it to organizations of all types.  Here at Sproutlogix, we’re very proud to match our own tool (DeveLoop) up to the best of the best as one of the most comprehensive learning tools out there.  You’ll find everything you need in a digital solution – to take your learning and development up a notch.

Give it a try!  You won’t regret it.
