Punjabi weddings are pretty much like how they’re depicted in the movies – they’re loud, they’re colourful, the drinks keep flowing and everyone has a blast. And a big part of the celebrations is the music; the most excellent, dhol-driven Punjabi Wedding Songs that we all have come to know and love.
In the spirit of helping you compile your perfect wedding song playlist, here is a list of top 20 Punjabi wedding songs that you can’t miss out on.
20. Mera Laung Gawacha – Musarrat Nazir
Some might be slightly confused as to the inclusion of this Tune, but most will understand the significance of this emotional powerhouse of a track. Musarrat Nazir, the legend from Pakistan, takes us on a melodious and memorable journey, and this song is worthy of a spot on any list of this nature.
19. Ainvayi Ainvayi
From the movie Band Baaja Baaraat featuring Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, this tune automatically waltzes its way into our list of the top Punjabi wedding songs of all time. Its soothing guitar fed intro, almost spoken word like first verse and melodious chorus is catchy and this one is a most enjoyable tune to shake a leg to for everyone in the guest list.
18. Angreji Beat – Gippy Grewal feat. Honey Singh
Love him or hate him, you can’t get past the fact that this song has on YouTube – despite an unnecessarily long intro – 12+ million views. That’s not to be trifled with. Once the song is in full swing however, we’re reminded of the reason Honey Singh shot to unprecedented levels of fame in the first place. Solid beat, solid rhymes, solid song!
17. Gabru – JStar feat. Honey Singh
Take a classic Punjabi beat, add the catchiest tune and lyrics, throw in a little of the excellent J Star and supplement with the sensation that is Honey Singh and you have a song, that though released in 2011, still remains a hot favourite in 2016.
16. Hikknaal – Dev D
An outstanding song that perhaps doesn’t get the credit it deserves, Hikknaalhas composer Amit Trivedi at his very best and the upfront and piercing (and excellent) vocals of Labh Janjua to produce a tune that, while clouded by obscurity in a certain sense, invokes a feeling of magic in the listener, as it no doubt will whenever played at any and all weddings. Just be prepared to answer the “what song is this” question you’ll be faced with.
15. Banno – Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Who would have guessed that a song that primarily features the lyrics “Banno tera swagger lage sexy” would go on to be a smash hit? But that’s exactly what ended up happening. Of course, those familiar with the (excellent) film will have a bit of context to fully appreciate the catchy melody of “Banno,” but for the rest of you, this is an excellent song to have on your Punjabi wedding songs playlist.
14. Saadi Galli Aaja – Nautanki Saala!
Opening with the most harmonious and melodic guitar licks, this song makes an incredible immediate impression on the listener, one that is proved to be right as the song progresses. Ayushmann Khurrana lays down some of the smoothest groves on his six string as he croons in that signature voice of his.
13. London Thumakda – Queen
Amit Trivedi has an impeccable reputation based on a body of work so diverse and excellent as to command respect from all four corners of this country. With this song, he brings in some of the groovy yet laid-back dhol, as the funky grooves of the song take the listener on a most pleasing and enjoyable journey.
12. Punjabi Wedding Song – Hasee Toh Phasee
“I, toh go crazy ke jab vajde Punjabi wedding song!” The beat of thedhol is strong in this excellent and aptly titled tune. Sunidhi Chauhan and Benny Dayal lend their most soothing vocals with Vishal and Shekhar doing their bit to keep the melody and harmony, perfectly complementing their excellent singers. The result? An excellent Punjabi wedding song.
11. Iski Uski – 2 States
Shankar Ehsaan Loy provide the music for this upbeat track that sounds more like a DJ Tiesto tune in the opening few seconds. The upbeat vibe continues throughout the song with Akriti Kakkar and Shahid Mallya ensuring a youthful and exuberant set of voices on the track.
10. Na Na Na Na – J Star
Okay, so the boyfriend and girlfriend theme might be a thing of the past, but on the day of the wedding, it’s a thing of the recent past isn’t it? Plus, after the success of Gabru, J Star has delivered and even more memorable and modern tune that would not be out of place at any modern wedding and is an excellent choice to play at yours.
9. D Se Dance – Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Well, the hint is in the name is it not? This is one of those songs that lives up to its name a hundred percent. If you’re looking to get everyone on the dance floor and shake a leg yourself, this is the song to do it! Sachin Jigar’s up-tempo and contemporary dhol beats serve as the backbone of a most enjoyable and funky tune.
8. Jine Mera Dil Luteya – Jazzy B
Just to be clear of the tour de force we’re dealing with here, some of the comments from the YouTube page of this particular tune go as such “When I was little, it was my favourite song and it still is.” Jazzy B put down one of the classic Punjabi tunes of our age with excellent lyrics, a powerful vocal performance and one of the catchiest choruses on the list. An English rap section features in the middle adding to the appeal of this ground-breaking tune and making it an entirely memorable little ditty worthy of featuring on any such list and certainly on any wedding playlist.
7. Dil Le Gayi Kudi Gujarat Di – Jasbir Jassi
Let your guests warm up with a series of modern hits – like some of the ones mentioned above – and then play this tune. The place will erupt! The opening sequence of string might be one of the most recognised in popular Punjabi music and by the time that the “ek munda Punjabi” opening lines hit, most feet will be on the dance floor.
6. Tunak Tun Tun – Daler Mehndi
Daler Mehndi once famously stated, “There will be a star in the sky that will bear my name.” While the unforgiving nature of showbiz dictated that such a thing did not materialise, the closest thing that Daler Mehndi achieved to immortality was his classic, smash hit Tunak Tunak Tun which continues to enjoy popularity world over.
5. Kala Doria Kundey Naal
We opened this list with a legendary tune and now we’re descending into that part of Punjabi music once more. You can go with the classic, folk version of this song or many of the modern remixes with groovy and upbeat dhol beats. But one thing is for sure – if this song is missing from your playlist, then so is a piece of beautiful, so beautiful and profound that it too manages to, for a few fleeting moments, unite people on either side of the border.
4. Sarke Sarke Jandiye Mutiyare Ne – Surinder and Prakash Kaur
To call this a legendary tune would be the understatement of the century. In fact, you’re likely to find absolutely nothing like it in contemporary times, so it’s a bit reminiscent of your wedding, no? Either way, give this classic tune an airing to accentuate memories that you aren’t likely to forget in a jiffy.
3. Mainu Deor De Vyah Wich Nach Len De – Surinder and Prakash Kaur
Some would call giving the number 4 and 3 positions on our list to Surinder and Prakash Kaur a bit of a cop out, but those complaints would certainly be from the people who haven’t heard either of these tunes, but especially Deor De Vyah which is about as classic and as good as traditional Punjabi wedding songs get.
2. Bajre Da Sita – Neha Bhasin
We recommend Neha Bhasin’s outstanding rendition that marries a certain contemporary tenderness to the old world charm of the original, hence making for an altogether classic tune.
1. Mehndi Ni Mehndi – Musarrat Nazir/Harshdeep Kaur
We started our list with a Musarrat Nazir tune, and we’re going to end, unabashedly with a Musarrat Nazir tune. But here we have the more contemporary – if equally beautiful – rendition by Harshdeep Kaur that has amassed its own followers. This is, as far as we’re concerned, the quintessential traditional Punjabi wedding song and deserves to be played at every Punjabi wedding.
And with that we conclude our list. Having said that, here are 30 more tunes that may not have made it to our top 20, but are definitely worth adding to your playlist:
