It’s a simple process – ink is applied to the surface of raised metal type and the type is then pressed against paper to make an impression. The finished article has a beautifully tactile quality, with a layer of ink and an indentation where the type pressed against the paper.

Today there is a major revival in the art of old fashioned letterpress printing. And at the forefront of this revival are our friends at Bella Figura, New York.
All their printing is done using antique cast-iron presses, 100% tree-free cotton paper from a 500 year old paper mill, vegetable-oil based and low-Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) inks and low-VOC and citrus-based solvents.
But that’s not all… they are wind-powered, carbon neutral and as eco-friendly as you can be. Plus they donate 1% of sales to environmental causes. And buy bus passes for their employees!
