Does Your New Year’s Resolutions Include a Review of Your Marital Settlement Agreement?

NewYearDicorceThe beginning of the New Year is always a good time to review and if needed, make changes and improvements to the important issues of your life. You might want to treat your Marital Settlement Agreement the same way. Now is the perfect time to look at all aspects of your agreement and make any needed changes to such issues as: child custody and child support, alimony, and property division. Some questions to ask yourself are:

1.  What changes have occurred in your life that might affect the agreement?
2.  Have you or your ex had an increase or decrease in income levels?
3.  Are any of your children now 18 years old?
4.  Are you happy with the way child custody is handled?
5.  Have living arrangements or work and travel schedules changed?

Did You Make the Right Decisions in the First Place?

The New Year is also a good time to consider how you made your original decisions regarding the Marital Settlement Agreement. At the time of the divorce agreement, particularly if it is stressful or painful, some people may feel a need to end the situation as quickly as possible. If so, maybe you felt pressure to end things quickly and failed to consider the agreement as carefully as you would have under other circumstances. An experienced divorce mediator, as an unbiased third party, can help you, or you and your ex review the Marital Settlement Agreement, calmly and efficiently. You can then decide whether the original decisions require amendments because of general life changes, or because the stress of the divorce may have influenced your decisions.
