Go, grab these –

Henna – About half a cup. You can use more depending on the length of your hair. More for more length.

Coffee powder- a teaspoon. This is for lustre

Oil for base – Coconut oil (for oily hair) or Olive Oil (for dry hair) – 1.5 tbsp

Magic Ingredient – Curd (for oily hair) or Mayonnaise (for dry hair)- 1 tbsp

Additional – 2-3 drops of lavender oil or the juice of half a lemon – optional (this is basically to get rid of the weird smell, but lavender helps you sleep and lemon prevents dandruff)

What are we upto?

Okay ,we know it sounds like you’re about to cook a horrible dish. But trust us, this is one of the best and the easiest DIY hair packs. I have oily hair and I prefer a mix of coconut oil and sesame oil. I usually order the Bhringraj oil from Soulflower.

Coconut oil cools your head and is a light oil, which will keep your hair healthy and shiny. (Unfortunately, I am allergic to its smell. I either get a runny nose or a headache. So I use a mixture of coconut and sesame oil. They say it helps promote hair growth as well.

One of the best things you can do to your hair is fill it with oil! Wash off the excess. If only I had listened to my mother when she told me this as a child, but in school we aimed to not let anyone call us chipku.

Mix all the ingredients (based on your hair type). I’ve used a bunch of different henna brands (Ayur, Nupur, VLCC, Singh) and I must say Singh is so far the best I’ve used, followed closely by Nupur. My mother in law brings packs from Chennai. Make sure you wear hand gloves as the henna can turn your palms a little orangey and that’s not cool to look at ,until you are a punk.

Add only so much water that you need. The consistency should be medium, neither too thick nor too runny. If you are using this hair pack to color your hair, then the mixture is best stored in a steel vessel. Keep it overnight, and apply it the next day.Look at the girl, right below. This consistency we are talking about.

Divide your hair into sections and apply it to hair strands. Make sure to wear your gloves again. If needed, take some help from your roommate or sister or someone to cover all sections of hair. Don’t worry about the smell of curd or mayo as lavender/lemon will get rid of it. Keep it for an hour or a little more. 20 minutes are good though.Wash off as thoroughly as possible. Use a bit of shampoo, if needed. Apply a few drops if vitamin E oil to keep your hair manageable and to add a shine to it.(This Vitamin E is a real rescuer, ain’t it ?)

A few things you should know

Never tie your hair up in a towel. Wrap the towel around your hair only for a very brief period. Tying it above your head causes frizz. Same goes for bringing it all forward and combing it back (some girls do this for volume)

Shampoos are generally cleansing agents (Nope, you cannot pull truck with the help of Shampoo). They do contain a lot of chemicals. When they say Repeat, if needed, take if neededå seriously.

Your hair should be very, very wet before applying shampoo. It lathers better.

Wash off the shampoo thoroughly. Not doing this causes dryness and brittleness.

And I repeat- Fill those tresses with oil. Wash off the excess! You’ll notice the difference really soon!!
