IMDb's Top 250 list has been a go-to for many film fans wanting to broaden their horizon when it comes to cinema. Loaded with classics, cult favourites and modern masterpieces, it's a pretty decent starting point for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the world of film. Voted into place by film fans and fanboys, you can see how the website's consensus-based rating system has delivered a populist approach to top film ranking.

While there are many crossovers, as you'd imagine IMDb's Top 100 is a far cry from Sound and Sight's recent results. Ordinarily, films like Citizen Kane, Vertigo and Mulholland Drive rank quite highly among top film pundits. However, quite shockingly - the latest poll's #1 Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles doesn't register on the IMDb Top 250 and didn't even crack an 8/10 rating. Having to watch a great deal of films to stay current with what's new, as well as play a bit of catch up, it isn't always easy to ensure you've got everything covered. Even if you make movie-watching your profession, it doesn't mean you'll have the time to watch or even find everything missing from your must-see list. Harakiri (1962)

Currently rated at #44, Harakiri is an action drama mystery based on the novel 'Ibun rônin ki' is directed by Masaki Kobayashi and stars Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Ishihama and Shima Iwashita.

The Shogunate's warrior clans split up as a result of peace in 17th-century Japan, making thousands of samurai jobless and impoverished. According to the samurai code, ritual suicide, or hara-kiri, is an honorable way to end such a fate. When an elder ronin seeking seppuku at a feudal lord's palace hears about the brutal suicide of another ronin who had earlier visited, he discloses how their pasts are connected and thus calls into question the integrity of the clan.

Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

Currently ranked at #64, Billy Wilder's crime drama mystery Witness for the Prosecution was nominated for 6 Oscars and stars Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton based on Agatha Christie's international stage success.

Ailing veteran British barrister, Sir Wilfrid Robarts, is forced back into the courtroom when he finds himself defending Leonard Vole, a man who is accused of killing a wealthy woman, in what turns out to be one of the strangest and most exciting murder cases of the attorney's career. Currently ranked at #82, Your Name. (Kimi no Na wa.) is an animated fantasy drama by visionary director Makoto Shinkai and based on his novel, featuring the voice talents of Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Mone Kamishiraishi and Ryô Narita.

The mayor's daughter of a small mountain town is Mitsuha. She's a normal high school student who lives with her sister and grandmother and isn't afraid to express her disinterest in participating in Shinto rituals or supporting her father's political campaign. She daydreams about leaving the uninteresting town and seeking her fortune in Tokyo. Taki is a high school student in Tokyo who wants to be an architect or artist and works part-time in an Italian restaurant. He has an odd dream every night in which he transforms into a high school student in a small mountain town. Strange connections emerge between two strangers. Will their growing connection be the only thing keeping them apart once it develops?

3 Idiots (2009)

Currently ranked at #84, 3 Idiots is a Bollywood comedy drama from writer-director Rajkumar Hirani starring Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Mona Singh.

Two friends, Farhan and Raju, are looking for a long-lost friend, Racho who sees the world in a different way. They think back to their time in college and remember their friend, who encouraged them to think outside the box even though the rest of the world thought they were "idiots". While the misleading movie title may make you think this film is more in line with The Three Stooges and Dumb and Dumber, it's more of an entertaining and inspirational comedy with a timeless message.

High and Low (1963)

Currently ranked at #87, High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku) is a crime drama mystery thriller from legendary Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshirô Mifune, Yutaka Sada and Tatsuya Nakadai.

An executive of a Yokohama shoe company learns that his son has been taken hostage and that he must pay a hefty ransom to have him safely returned. While he learns that by some mistake his son is safe at home, the kidnapper insists the businessman either you pay up or the kid dies. He now finds himself in a moral bind because he must decide between paying the kidnappers or using the cash to seal a crucial business deal.
