The Difference Between Accounting and Auditing

I meet a lot of new people from work, blogging, social media, social events, travel, etc. You think I’m used to introducing myself, but no. I hate those basic converstaion starters like “how are you” or “how old are you” and what I hate most is “what do you do” because it will certainly be followed by “oh, you mean accounting? I hate Math. God, I hate numbers!!”

I’m proud of being an auditor and I’d love to explain why I love my profession but, seriously, shouldn’t people be aware that auditing is faaar different from accounting? I mean, all industries have both. So whether you’re in whatever line of work, you should be a least familiar about the difference of the two.

Don’t tell me, “I’m not in the line of Business so how should I know?”. If you are receiving your monthly pay, the process involves an accountant. (Oo, CPA man yan o hindi, accountant padin yan.) They compute, they record, they book, they report everything that involves the company’s money. While the auditors are those annoying people who randomly check what you do and how you do. Auditors are working more on the business process (from frontline to management to financial reporting) while accountants are focused on monitoring the monetary value of everything.

Accountants = numbers
Auditors = process

^That’s the simplest way I know to explain the difference, dears.

So if you have questions about the numbers the money, etc. go to the accountants. If you have questions about the business process of whatever part of the business, call the auditors. They’re both responsible for confidentiality, but at least you know what they’re handling.

Question number idk: Aren’t the CPAs become auditors? Yes, they can be. Because as CPAs, they are expected to be the experts when it comes to financial statements. Most often, CPAs are working as external auditors checking an organization’s financial standings.

Internal auditors are not necessarily required to be COAs, but are expected to adapt and learn fast about the business industry and process. As an Internal Auditor, you have access to everything (via audit engagements) and the top management expects you to be the know-it-all when it comes to overall business process. (Well, not actually individually know-it-all but honestly, some bosses expect you are.)

I honestly don’t know how many times I’ve explained this to people. I know I can just tell them “Lol yeah right” because we know accounting and Math and numbers as well, but idk sometimes the comparisons irritate me.

No offense, accountants. I’m no CPA. I have no title, if you’re wondering. I just find it annoying when people are reacting like I have a built-in calculator in my mind. (I used to have one, but idk life happened. Lol)
