Free Photography Backdrops for Your Blog Photography

Almost every blogger I know and am aware of does their own Photography for their blog, with the occasional credited work here and there when our supplies are wearing thin. When I first started out blogging, I’d simply just stand products up on my windowsill and click! Hey presto, you’ve got yourself a below average photograph that these days would not be appreciated or even liked on Instagram.

As time has passed during my time blogging, I have found myself becoming more creative with my photographs and finally putting my degree in photography to good use! There’s so many simple tips and tricks for taking good photographs and I figured I’d start a mini series of posts featuring my very own tips for you all! To kick things off, in today’s post I’m talking all about backdrops for your photos and affordable ways to get your hands on them.

Marble. Obviously
Now one of the most popular backdrops over the last year has been Marble. I’d day 80% of my Instagram feed is filled with marble backgrounds, but it clearly inspired me to try it out for myself. But real marble, let’s face it, a slab of that is expensive and I don’t have the pennies to be buying fancy backdrops over living essentials. But I found a way of achieving the look of real marble, for a fraction of the price. I bought a roll of white marble vinyl on eBay for around £6 which is perfect for this!

Wrapping Paper
If you don’t have any lying around from recent birthday’s or presents you’ve opened yourself, this is probably one of the cheapest ways you can spice up your photographs. For instance, the metallic gold chevron paper above is a keepsake from one of the presents I received from my best friends and all for good reason. A roll of patterned Wrapping Paper these days cost around £2, but what’s with all the patterns lately? Go for plain, block colours for contrast against the products you’re photographing. You’ll often find plain wrapping paper is cheaper than patterned. Bonus!

Sounds odd, right? And expensive? I’m not telling you to go buy a 15m roll of Wallpaper from your local DIY store, no! That’d be crazy, unless you need it. Instead, order a variety of wallpaper samples. It can be awkward going in-store and asking for samples, especially when you know you don’t intend to purchase the real deal. Simply type into your chosen search engine ‘free wallpaper samples’ and you’ll find all sorts of goodies! I’ve used Next, Designer Wallpapers and iLuv Wallpapers in the past, and you’ll often find all you’ve got to fork out for is £2 - £3 on postage, yet you’ve got yourself all sorts of new backdrops to start getting creative with!

This is the oddest of the four featured in this post, and might even seem the most expensive. But it's not. Identical to the process of collating free wallpaper samples, tile merchants also offer free samples and they are full-sized! From marble slabs and slate tiles, to planks of laminate flooring, you can get all sorts of effects for your photos. Better yet, they make lovely bases for vases, perfume or anything else you can think of when they are not in use!

Those are my most used backdrops at the moment, but refer back to this page on a monthly basis for any updates as time goes on. Be sure to follow me on social media to find out when my next photography series is for future tips on props, techniques and more!
