Swipe, swipe, swipe. Most of us have done it – flicking through partners on various dating apps as though we’re shopping from a catalogue. But people aren’t commodities, and we can’t get to know them solely through their dating profiles that they put online. A working title for this piece was “date like your grandma” (thankfully, we decided against it…), but the fact remains that things were often simpler and far sweeter in her day.
Now, we’re under no illusions about the fact that in many ways, society is better for dating these days. For example, there’s far less pressure about finding “the one,” and it’s a lot more acceptable to break up with people for reasons ranging from the serious through to, “Sorry, I’m just not feeling it.” But there’s a lot about today’s dating world that makes us feel a little hopeless, and that’s maybe where vintage dating concepts could come in.

Instead of getting to know someone via Snapchat or Instagram and then a few drinks in a bar, why not show that you’ve got a little more substance to you, and try some of these concepts instead?
Dinner & a movie
Ah, the ultimate classic. Many would argue that this kind of dating has never gone out of style, and yet would you believe? You’ll find a lot of millennials lamenting that they’re never taken on a proper date. The dinner and a movie combo is such a great choice even now in the era of Netflix because there’s an innocence about it, and you have something far more exciting to look forward to than just sitting around at home. Get dressed up, read movie reviews and really go to town!
Talking to someone over dinner gives you a level of getting up close and personal that you might not get over chatting online or on the phone. It’s also a great excuse to enjoy some great food in some good company. You can learn a lot about someone in this setting – for example, their manners and tastes – and what’s more, it’s typically a safe environment, too. When it comes to the movie, that’s a chance to steal a kiss if things are going good!
Head on out to the bingo
These days, going to the Bingo is back “in” in a whole new way. Good news, because the older generation seem to love it – so what are we missing out on? The UK’s Bongo’s Bingo has been taking not just their country, but the world, by storm. They’ve gone all over their native nation, as well as overseas as far afield as Sydney, and now have regular events in Amsterdam as well as a residency in Ibiza. They take the concept of bingo and bring it to a party – think top DJs, top prizes and a fair few drinks.
If you’re looking for a really fun date which shows that you can think outside of the box, looking up an event like this will win you serious brownie points. You have to stay focused, but you can still party and have fun. If you’re not exactly an old hat at the game, don’t worry. You don’t have to go fully vintage – these days, the internet saves the day with everything. You can play no deposit bingo online to give yourself a refresher course in all of the rules.
Looking to show off your baking skills? Or maybe you just really, really like lunch but don’t want to spend a lot? Enjoying an afternoon at the park or the beach with a picnic in the warmer months is a really nice idea when it comes to getting to know someone, and it ticks all the boxes when it comes to “vintage” that you need. You can keep things casual or go all out, either making the food yourself or buying it at the store. Perhaps you could even bake for the occasion together, as a team? Just don’t forget the picnic blanket, and for bonus points, bring a basket (and maybe even wine…) as well.
When you’re there, there’s plenty of opportunity to talk and really get to know your potential partner and their interests as well. A stroll around the setting is a fantastic way to do so – taking in the outdoors is something we modern folk often forget to do.
No matter what kind of retro date you opt for, just remember that there’s something beautiful about taking time to live life away from apps on a screen. Getting out there and meeting new people and spending time with them in the good, old-fashioned way isn’t just something people did before technology, it was a great way to have a good time. While previous generations weren’t perfect, there’s something to be said for that.
