The United States; based on our ideological priorities invest more money into prison systems and pharmaceutical research then they invest into the education system. As a result of this neglect, teacher expectations have been altered as well as the expectation of the student. We have created an environment that does not teach students but rather conditions them to accept basic information, which makes them vulnerable to exploitation and manipulation.
Ever since the beginning of this American nation, there have been components within society that have separated and distinguished people from one another. The most fundamental and most important was Education. The educated decided the law of the land and the ideology under which this country was ran. The educated were the property owners, those who had enough wealth to afford teaching. In those days education or being educated meant to have the ability to read and write, as well as an understanding of mathematics.
Modern education has strayed even further from the goal of inspiring thought and critical thinking. Education has become a program where children are indoctrinated into a system. They are treated merely as herds or cattle.
I remember sitting in the classroom of history class. African history was the topic, we always managed to get a week out of the school year. We were taught about the slave trade, a few other topics like civil war and oppressive governments. We soon switched chapters, when I noticed there were sections that we didn’t study. There were sections about the Moors, a highly civilized and powerful black people who originated from Africa. There were sections about art and early civilization. We ended up not covering those sections and moved on to the next chapters.
Just an example of how education is misguiding; education should be a well rounded and non bias representation of the truth. It should paint a complete picture of events with both sides of any conflict or debate represented. As it pertains to history and discovery. Education should inspire thought, not direct it. Challenge a student to search for truth and understanding for the soul purpose of growth and personal development.
