My kids have always wanted to try Fishing. I have always said no because I didn’t think they would have the patience for it. But no, it is actually me – I don’t think I can sit there quietly for hours while waiting for the fish to eat my bait! My dad loves fishing and he has been to various fishing ponds in Klang Valley and Selangor to try his luck. He recently managed to convince me to take the kids to for some ‘fishy’ fun. Here are three spots to try with kids:
1. Fish Valley, Semenyih
A good introduction for fishing can be found at Fish Valley. With two ponds to try your luck in, a restaurant to enjoy your fresh catch and activities like ATV it makes for a nice trip out of the city. Read our review of Fish Valley here.
The fee for the small pond is RM10 for unlimited hours, RM20 for the big one. You can take your catch home – this is charged per kg. You may have it cooked at the restaurant.
You can rent rods here for RM15 per rod per day (7am –7pm) with a refundable RM30 deposit. Baits are RM2 per pack.
2. Natural Exotic Fishing Pond, Behrang
Another fishing spot we went a few months ago in Behrang, a small town in Perak, about 1 hour drive from KL. The cost of the fishing here is MYR 100 for 4 hours. This is a catch-and-release fishing pond so you can’t bring your catch home.
No fishing gear for rent here so bring your own rods. You will need a heavy duty one as the minimum size of the fish here is about 10kg. Expect some battle when the fish catches the bait!
They do sell baits here, but we brought our own. We bought from cat fish from the supermarket and cut into small chunks. It worked wonders! We cough 12 big orange tail catfish in 3 hours!
Note that there is not barrier between the platform and the pond so if you are bringing young children, please be aware. The platform is sheltered so you can fish rain or shine. There are also rod stands fixed on the concrete platform so you can relax while waiting for any action on your rods. There is also a little café above the platform for snacks and drinks.
You will see some serious anglers here but with beginners’ luck we caught more fish than any of the experienced anglers that day, making then wonder what kind of magic we had.
There are a few guides ready to assist you to bring the fish up to the platform, unhook it and release it back to the pond. You can do it yourself but I preferred not to. The kids managed to push some of the fish back to the pond but be aware: we were told that the catfish has needle like fins that can really hurt.
Check out their Facebook page for directions and further info here.
